LUBBOCK, Texas – Highlighted by a ranked singles win for Cristina Tiglea, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders earned a dominating, 5-2, win over the No. 65 Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The No. 24-ranked Lady Raiders (10-5, 3-1 Big 12) came out on fire in doubles, securing the team's 11th doubles point of the season. First, Tech's No. 7 pairing of Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova dominated their match at court one from start to finish, taking the 6-2 victory over Kansas State duo Veronika Kulhava and Tereze Polakova.
K-State (7-5, 1-3 Big 12) was able to even the match with a 6-1 win at court three. However, the Lady Raiders maintained their composure to claim the doubles point when Mariya Polishchuk and Tiglea won in commanding fashion, 6-2, against Maralgoo Chomsomjav and Manami Ukita at two doubles.
K-State claimed the first singles match of the day to tie it at 1-1 when the Wildcats got the victory at court five. However, that tie was short lived whenever Andreea Lila overtook Maria Santos at court six in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
With the 2-1 advantage, Sayfetdinova rallied back in the second set to win her match against Ukita. The Lady Raider took set one, 6-3, before going down 1-3 in the next. Sayfetdinova fought back to ties things at 5-5, then won the next two games to win it, 7-5, for Tech's third point of the day.
At court one, No. 85 Tiglea and No. 105 Vanesa Suarez were battling. Suarez took the early lead in set one, 2-0, before Tiglea won six of the next seven games for the 6-3 advantage. Then, Suarez went ahead 3-1 in the following set. But, the Lady Raider didn't back down. She saved the match after being down 4-5, eventually tying things at 5-all, then won the next two games to claim the set, 7-5. This win gives Tiglea two over ranked opponents this week.
After the contest was clinched, the Wildcats won their second singles match of the day at court four. Then, Tech closed out the afternoon with a come-from-behind win at court two by Polishchuk. The Lady Raider went down early to Kulhava in a first set breaker, 6-7 (2), but evened the match with a decisive, 6-2 second set. Polishchuk would get the victory after winning the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-5, to give tech a 5-2 win.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are back on the road as they travel to Lawrence, Kan., for a match against the Jayhawks on March 14, then head to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones on March 16. Â
