No. 10 Tech tied for seventh in the desert
April 12, 2024 | Men's Golf
PHOENIX, Ariz. — The No. 10 Texas Tech men's golf team kicked off its final tournament of the regular season on Friday with 36 holes at the Thunderbird Collegiate, hosted by Arizona State, at Papago Golf Course. After carding an even-par 284 on the par-71 course in round one, the Red Raiders used a 1-under-par 283 in round two to finish the day 1-under and sit in a tie for seventh among the 17 teams in action.
While the Red Raiders were fortunate to complete round two with its earlier afternoon tee time, play was halted due to darkness for eight of the 17 schools. Those eight teams will finish round two beginning at 6:30 a.m. local time. Round three tee times remain to be determined, as of late Friday evening.
Baard Skogen led Tech's round-two performance with a 3-under-par 68, a five-shot improvement from his round-one score. The senior ascended into a tie for 20th on the individual leaderboard as a result. Calum Scott also finished the day in a tie for 20th as the junior followed his 1-under-par round one with an even-par round two, making the duo each 1-under-par after 36 holes.
Sitting just one shot behind Tech's two leaders is Charlie DeLong, who fired a 1-under-par 70 in round one and a 1-over-par 72 in round two. At even-par, the junior sits in a tie for 25th entering Saturday's final round. Sophomore Matthew Comegys finds himself one shot behind DeLong and in a tie for 33rd after ending round two with his third eagle of the season on hole No. 9.Â
While his card will not count towards the Red Raiders' team score, participating as an individual, Vicente Marzilio enjoyed a solid day at Papago Golf Course. The senior was hot to start the day, shooting 3-under-par over his opening nine holes of golf; Marzilio completed round one at 1-under 70. While the Red Raiders' lineup finished round two, Marzilio's round was halted after hole No. 14 due to darkness. He is 2-over in the second round with four holes remaining to play on Saturday morning before beginning the final round.
The Thunderbird Collegiate will conclude on Saturday. Stay tuned to Texas Tech's social media accounts or Golfstat.com for up-to-date scoring and the announcement of Saturday's final round tee times.
