LUBBOCK, Texas – After another undefeated weekend for the Lady Raider, senior Metka Komac was awarded with her first career Big 12 Player of the Week honor as announced by the conference office on Tuesday evening.
This marks the third weekly conference award for the Lady Raiders this year and the third time in program history that Tech has earned three or more weekly Big 12 accolades in the same season.
Last week, Komac aided the Lady Raiders to their sixth win in a row and helped tie the program record of conference wins with eight. Tech (15-5, 8-1 Big 12) was able to win two matches last week against No. 52 TCU and No. 31 Baylor and Komac played a huge part in those victories.
Against the Horned Frogs, Texas Tech won a much-needed doubles point over TCU as the team got its first doubles win of the day from No. 6-ranked Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova, 6-4, against Yu-Chin Tsai and Chiho Mushika at court one. In singles, Komac kept the Lady Raiders in the match as she tied it up at 3-all with a victory against Tsai at court four, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Moving on to Baylor, Komac and Sayfetdinova kept up their winning ways in doubles as they overtook the pairing of Zuzanna Kubacha and Sierra Berry at the top court by a 6-4 score. This gave the Lady Raiders their sixth doubles point in a row (and 11 of the last 12 matches) as well as their 16th overall of the season. Komac extended her singles win streak to four when she later defeated Kubacha in straight sets at court five, 7-6 (5), 6-2, en route to the sweep over the Bears.
The Slovenia native is third on the team with nine dual singles wins and boasts a 5-2 record at court five. She also ties for second on the team with six singles wins in Big 12 play. In doubles, Komac ties for the team-best with 23 overall wins and 15 dual doubles wins as she holds a 15-1 record at court one. She also ties for the team-lead with an 8-1 record in conference and two ranked doubles victories.
In her career, Komac now totals 80 overall doubles wins and is just eight away from being in the top-10 of the record book in doubles victories. In addition, Komac is only two wins away from being in the top-10 in program history in dual doubles wins at court one.
Up next, the Lady Raiders are on the road for two matches to take on the No. 8 Texas Longhorns on April 4 and the No. 23 Oklahoma Sooners on April 6.
