LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Women's Tennis has signed University of Montana transfer Hailey Murphy to the Scarlet & Black as announced by head coach Adam Herendeen on Saturday morning.
"We are thrilled Hailey chose to be a Red Raider! Her improvement the past few years has been remarkable, and it shows in her results at the top spot in the lineup. We knew as soon as she came to campus that Hailey was the perfect fit, and we are really excited about the team that we have for next season!" Herendeen said.
Murphy is coming off a breakout sophomore stint with the Grizzlies, where she played primarily at court one singles for Montana. The Calgary, Alberta native helped the team to a regular-season Big Sky title as the Grizzlies went 6-2 in conference play. During that time, Murphy put together an undefeated singles record at the top court where she went 8-0 in Big Sky matches, earning herself unanimous Big Sky MVP and unanimous All-Big Sky Singles First Team accolades. She boasted an overall singles record of 22-5 on the season with a 16-3 dual record. In addition, she went 12-1 at court one and 4-2 at court two, closing her sophomore year out on a 10-match win streak.
In doubles, Murphy totaled 11 overall wins with seven of those coming from dual matches. She played primarily at court one doubles, collecting seven wins at the position and a 4-4 record in Big Sky play to be named to the All-Big Sky Doubles Second Team.
During the fall, Murphy had a great showing in the ITA Mountain Regionals singles back draw – advancing to the semifinals with victories against players from Wyoming, Colorado, Utah State and Utah, all while never dropping a set in those wins. In the doubles main draw at regionals, Murphy made it to the Round of 16 after collecting victories against teams from Utah (8-5) and Air Force (8-4). In the spring, Murphy recorded her first career Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week selection after aiding Montana to wins over Sacramento State and Northern Arizona in undefeated fashion in singles.
In her freshman season, the Academic All-Big Sky selection went 16-14 overall in singles, playing most of her matches at the court three position. There, she picked up five wins as well as two more at court two. In doubles, she recorded 13 overall wins and boasted a 5-2 doubles record in conference play to be named All-Big Sky Honorable Mention Doubles. Playing primarily at court three doubles, she put together an 8-2 record at that position.
Murphy is set to join the Lady Raiders as a junior with two more years of eligibility.
