LUBBOCK, Texas — Four Red Raiders from the men's golf team made the journey to Tanah Merah Country Club in Tanah Merah, Singapore, for the 34th World Amateur Team Championship, set to take place Oct. 8-11. The Texas Tech men's golf program last competed, Sept. 29-30, at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club, which preceded the group heading halfway around the world.
Texas Tech will be represented this week by:Â
Conducted by the International Golf Federation (formerly the World Amateur Golf Council), which comprises the national governing bodies of golf in 150 countries, the World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition. The men compete for the Eisenhower Trophy, while the women's side competes for the Espirito Santo Trophy. In addition, members of the winning teams receive gold medals, members of the second-place teams receive silver medals, and members of the third-place teams receive bronze medals.
Each team has two or three players and plays 18 holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship.
The United States of America will look to become the first team to win consecutive WATC titles since it last did so in 2012 and 2014. The USA's last gold medal in the Eisenhower Trophy was its 16th, bringing the total USA medal count to 28. The USA is one of seven countries to have competed in every edition of the championship. The USA is also in a position to become the first country since 1994 to win both the men's and women's competitions in the same year, following its victory in the competition for the Espirito Santo Trophy last week. The last country to achieve this feat was also the USA.
