LUBBOCK, Texas – After going 3-0 on the weekend and helping Texas Tech to two wins, including another top-25 victory, junior Yekaterina Dmitrichenko was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time of her career as announced on Tuesday afternoon by the league office.
Dmitrichenko is the second Lady Raider to win Big 12 Player of the Week this year after Mariia Hlahola earned the honor in January. This marks back-to-back seasons now that two or more different players have won the award for the first time since the 2016-17 seasons.
The Kazakhstan native played an instrumental role in helping Tech win its two matches this week against No. 24 UC Santa Barbara and at Arizona in a nonconference contest. Against the Gauchos, Dmitrichenko and partner Hailey Murphy picked up a win at court two over Ali Benedetto and Emma Tutoveanu to clinch a crucial doubles point for the Lady Raiders, that would later be needed to win the match. In singles at court three, Dmitrichenko defeated Tyra Richardson in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5, to tie the match at 2-2, before the Lady Raiders would win it by a 4-3 overall score for their second top-25 win this year.
The Lady Raiders earned their fourth sweep of the season with a 4-0 win at Arizona. Although Dmitrichenko's doubles match went unfinished, she would go on to clinch the sweep against Martyna Ostrzygalo at court three, 6-2, 6-4, to aid Tech to a 7-1 nonconference record.
Never dropping a set this week, Dmitrichenko ties for the team lead with six dual singles wins, mostly at court three, and is a perfect 6-0 so far this spring in dual matches. In addition, she is also 3-1 in dual doubles matches and has helped the team win three doubles points.
Up next, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders begin conference play with a home match against the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, February 28 at 5 p.m.
