Tech got six one-run innings from Heuer and three shutout from Hutyra in the win
HOUSTON – Right-handed pitchers Mac Heuer and Parker Hutyra combined for a one-hitter to propel Texas Tech Baseball to a 4-1 victory over the University of Houston Friday night at Schroeder Park in the Big 12 Conference opener.
In the win, Texas Tech (4-11, 1-0 Big 12), put together its most complete performance of the season, as the Red Raiders allowed just one hit, a two-out solo home run by Houston's (11-5, 0-1 Big 12) Connor McGinnis.
Locked in a pitchers-duel, Heuer tossed the best start of his young career, going six innings allowing just the solo home run. He walked three and struck out five.
After Houston's Paul Schmitz needed just five pitches in a 1-2-3 first, A lead-off walk, a stolen base and a tag-up on a foul out placed the Cougars lone runner in scoring position for the first four innings.
With one-out and the speedy Tre Broussard 90-feet away at third, Heuer snared a liner right back up the middle and turned toward third to complete the double play.
In the top of the second, the Red Raiders, used a lead-off single from Logan Hughes and a stolen base to place a runner in scoring position and one out for Davis Rivers. With the count full, Rivers, ripped a ball off the glove UHs Tyler Cox that advanced Hughes to third.
The Red Raiders next batter, shortstop TJ Pomepy worked the count even and ripped a ball toward third at 106 MPH. Headed for the left-field corner, Houston's Aaron Lugo caught the line drive and completed the double play at first.
After Heuer erased a lead-off baserunner in the bottom of the second on a 6-4-3 double play, the Red Raiders used a two-out rally to strike first.
Kyeler Thompson worked a walk and stole second to put a runner in scoring position for Damian Bravo, who down 0-2 in the count plated Thompson for his first of three runs scored on the night.
Following a 1-2-3 bottom of the third from Heuer with two punchouts, the Red Raiders doubled their lead in the top of the fourth when a lead-off single from Dylan Maxcey and a grounder placed a runner in scoring position for Pompey.
Robbed of extra bases in his first AB, Pompey had better luck in at-bat two, ripping a 105 MPH single into left that scored Maxcey.
Pitching with a two-run lead, Heuer recorded the first two out via groundouts before allowing the two-out solo bomb.
With their lead cut in half, Thompson again scored with two outs, this time on an RBI single from Robin Villeneuve. Villeneuve reached base three times on Friday on the single and a pair of walks and made a pair of highlight reel catches.
In the fifth, Houston placed its final runner in scoring position with two outs, but Heuer coaxed a lazy fly out to get to the sixth.
Returning for the sixth for the second-straight weekend, Heuer this time finished the frame, using a ground out, the highlight reel catch from Villeneuve and a fly out to right to send the game to the seventh.
Up by a pair, the Red Raiders added their fourth and final run of the night in the seventh, when two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Hughes. The outfielder ahead in the count 2-0, singled up the first base line to give Tech the three-run lead.
With Heuer done for the night after six, it was Hutyra's turn to shove, as the righty ended a scoreless seventh fired up after a 2-2 strikeout of Cam Clime.
The strike out shifted the momentum for good in favor of the Red Raiders, as Hutyra tossed two more perfect innings to close out the victory.
With the win, Tech snapped its 15-game road losing streak, its three-game overall losing streak and started 1-0 in Big 12 play for the third time in four seasons.
