The Red Raiders overcame deficits of 4-1 and 6-4 to take a 7-6 lead in the seventh, before ASU tied it on an infield hit
TEMPE, Ariz. – On a cold, wet and windy night in Tempe (temperatures dropped in the upper 50s), Texas Tech Baseball and Arizona State played a back-and-forth game that was ultimately suspended at seven-all with the bases loaded and two outs in seventh on Friday night.
Down 4-1 in the third and 6-4 after six, Texas Tech Baseball ultimately used a three-run bases-clearing double from Davis Rivers to take a 7-6 lead.
Looking to hold the lead, Texas Tech's (11-22, 7-9 Big 12) Lukas Pirko recorded the first two outs of the seventh, before Arizona State (24-14, 10-6 Big 12) used a full-count single and a 3-2 walk to load the bases for Isiah Jackson.
Down in the count 0-2, Jackson poked one deep in the hole that Tech's Coleman Ryan was able to glove. Ryan attempted a jump throw across the diamond, but the speedy Jackson beat the toss allowing Nu'u Contrades to score from third.
When the game resumes the Sun Devils will have lead-off hitter Kyle Walker at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After neither side scratched across a run over the first two innings, the Red Raiders used back-to-back singles by Garet Boehm and Ryan to set the table for lead-off hitter Tracer Loez.
With runners on the corners and one out, Ryan stole second. The stolen base proved to be crucial as a ground ball that could have been a double play instead turned into an RBI groundout that scored Boehm from third.
Armed with the lead, Tech starter Tyler Boudreau immediately ran into trouble in his half of third, when ASU used a lead-off single and double down the third baseline to place the a pair in scoring position.
After Boudreau struck out Jackson, ASUs used a single to center from Walker and a three-run home run by Landon Hariston to take a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth, the Red Raiders immediately cut into the ASU deficit, when back-to-back doubles from Logan Hughes and Robin Villeneuve plated Tech's second run to cut the ASU lead to 4-2.
On second base with nobody out, Villeneuve timed ASUs Jack Martinez perfectly and stole third, before scoring on an RBI single from Antonelli Savattere. Savattere was 1-for-2 in the suspended games with two walks.
After a 1-2-3 fourth from Boudreau, the Red Raiders got a lead-off double from Tracer Lopez and a walk from Bravo to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base for Hughes who lifted a fly ball to center.
The Red Raiders next batter, Villeneuve, swung and missed on a 3-2 pitch for the innings second out.
On the play, the Red Raiders pulled off a double steal that turned into a run when Josiah Cromwick's throw eluded Contrades at third and bounded into left. The muffed throw allowed Lopez to score from third and placed Bravo at third base with two outs.
A bit rattled by the misplay in the field, Martinez immediately issued a four-pitch walk, before stranding both Bravo and Savattere on the base paths on a flyout.
Tied for the first time since the end of the second, ASU used a reviewed hit-by-pitch and a well-executed single to place runners on the corners with one out. The next ASU batter, Matt King gave the Sun Devils a 5-4 lead just one pitch later when he reached on a throwing error by Boehm.
With his pitch count hovering around 100, Martinez returned for the top of the sixth and retired the first two Tech batters of the frame before walking Ryan on a full count. The walk proved to be the end of the line for Martinez who went 5.2 innings and allowed six hits and four runs (three earned). The righty walked three and struck out seven in his 109 pitch outing.
With Ryan on first base and Lopez at the plate, ASU turned to Tennessee transfer Derek Schaefer who retired Lopez on a flyout on the first pitch he threw.
To start the home-half of the sixth, the Red Raider turned to lefty Zach Erdman, who after making a nice play on a comebacker allowed back-to-back singles to place runners on first and second for Jackson.
Behind in the count 1-2, Jackson turned on a breaking ball from Erdman and ripped a single between Boehm and Ryan that gave ASU a 6-4 lead.
The pitch was the final that Erdman would throw on the night, as Tech turned to Pirko, who worked around two-out traffic, to keep the Red Raiders down by just two.
Facing Schaefer for the second-straight inning, the Red Raiders loaded the bases on a two-base error and back-to-back two out walks, for Rivers. The catcher ripped the third offering he saw for 106 MPH, three-RBI double that gave Tech a 7-6 lead.
With the rain continuing to pick up in intensity, Pirko returned to the mound for the seventh. In the frame, ASU used the pair of walks and the two singles to tie the game at seven.
The final single, the infield hit from Jackson on an 0-2 count, proved to be the final pitch of the night, as the game was suspended with the bases loaded and two outs in a 7-7 game.
UP NEXT:
The Red Raiders will look to escape the bases loaded jam on Saturday afternoon when the game is resumed at 2 p.m. (CT)/Noon (MST). The series third and final game will commence 30-45 minutes after the final pitch of the resumed game.
