The former Red Raider went five innings and allowed just two runs to earn his first career MLB victory in his MLB debut
BOSTON – Called up as the Boston Red Sox 27th-Man for a doubleheader Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, former Texas Tech right-hander Hunter Dobbins went five strong innings on ESPNs Sunday Night Baseball to earn his first career victory in his MLB debut.
A native of Bryan, Texas, Dobbins became the 39th Red Raider to make his MLB debut all-time and is the sixth Red Raider from the 2019 College World Series team to reach the Big Leagues joining Clayton Beeter (Yankees, 2024), Josh Jung (Rangers, 2022), Caleb Killian (Cubs, 2022), John McMillion (Royals, 2023) and Mason Montgomery (Rays, 2024).
After being added to the 40-Man roster this past winter, Dobbins got the call on Saturday night after going 17-16 with 3.88 ERA in 63 games (61 starts) during his minor league career.
An eighth-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Red Sox, Dobbins worked through back-to-back first inning doubles using a pick-off and his first MLB punchout to hold the potent Cardinals lineup to just a run in the first.
Heading back out in a 1-1 game for the second, Dobbins closed a 1-2-3 second with back-to-back punchouts.
The Boston offense exploded in second and third innings staking Dobbins to a 10-1 lead through three innings.
With the game well in control, Dobbins worked around base runners in the fourth and fifth to fire the requisite 15 outs needed to earn his first MLB win. Dobbins hit 97 MPH in the outing and forced 14 swings and misses.Â
In the end, Dobbins went five innings and allowed eight hits and two runs. The righty struck out five, helping the Red Sox to an 18-7 win.Â
