Scott's 68 leads Tech to second place start at Urbana Regional
May 12, 2025 | Men's Golf
URBANA, Ill. – The No. 23 Texas Tech men's golf team jumped out to a second-place start after round one at the NCAA Urbana Regional on Monday at Atkins Golf Club. The Red Raiders shot 5-under-par (279) as a team, led by senior Calum Scott's first-round 3-under-par 68.
Scott is tied for third place with two others and trails the lead by five shots, a pace set by Jackson Buchanan (-8) of Illinois on his home course - which set a new course-record. A pair of eagles helped Scott's 68 during his first round; the first coming on hole No. 15, a 575-yard par 5, followed by the second just four holes later on the 565-yard par 5 on hole No. 1. The two eagles were his sixth and seventh of the season, tying him with Connor Graham for the most on the team.
Scott dipped as low as 4-under-par twice during his opening round. He opened with three straight pars, teeing off on No. 10, and followed that with birdies on No. 13 and No. 14, and his first eagle on hole No. 15. Bogeys on holes No. 16 and No. 17 dropped Scott back to finishing the back nine 2-under-par (33). The eagle on No. 1 pushed Scott back to 4-under-par after 10 holes. Pars on seven of his final eight holes with one bogey blemish on No. 7 left him 3-under-par (68) for the round and 1-under (35) on the front nine.
Sophomore Ben Gregg was another Red Raider standout on Monday, posting a 2-under-par 69 to give Texas Tech a pair of players in the Top 10 after the first round among the 75 players in the field. Coupled with the three other Red Raiders in action – Charlie DeLong, Graham and Tim Wiedemeyer – who each posted even-par 71 scores, it helped place Texas Tech in second at 5-under-par, only trailing the host, No. 14 Illinois, by two shots for the lead. The Red Raiders have a two-shot lead on third-place UNLV (-3), a four-shot lead on fourth-place Troy (-1) and a six-shot lead on Long Beach State (+1) and Marquette (+1), who share a tie for fifth place.
All five Red Raiders in action are inside the Top 20, with DeLong, Graham, and Wiedemeyer each tied for 19th. Of the 13 schools in action, Texas Tech is the only program with all five of its players in the Top 20.Â
Regional play continues on Tuesday at 8 a.m. CDT with the second round and will conclude on Wednesday with the final round. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site will advance to play in the championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
