
Red Raiders sit fourth at Urbana Regional after 36 holes

URBANA, Ill. – Needing to be a Top 5 team, the No. 23 Texas Tech men's golf team sits in fourth place after Tuesday's second round at the NCAA Urbana Regional at Atkins Golf Club. Wednesday will be the final round, which will determine the five advancing teams that will contend for a national championship, May 23-28, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
Texas Tech carded a 3-over-par (287) in the second round, which follows Monday's blistering 5-under-par (279) to open play that put the Red Raiders in second place after round one. Tech dropped to fourth after 36 holes but has a one-shot lead on fifth-place Troy and a six-shot advantage against sixth-place Marquette. The home team, No. 14 Illinois, continues to be the regional leader (-10), while Oklahoma State (-7) and UNLV (-7) are tied for second place. The Cowboys roared back from seventh place and into a tie for second by shooting a round-two best 9-under-par (275).
Spearheading the Red Raiders' effort was senior Calum Scott once again. Scott carded a 3-under-par (68) in the first round and backed it up with a second round 2-under-par (69) to lead the Red Raiders for their top score again. At 5-under-par after 36 holes, Scott is tied for fourth place out of the 71 individuals with two rounds scored.Â
Scott's second round began with a birdie on hole No. 1, the same par-5 he eagled on Monday. The senior opened Tuesday with 12 straight holes of bogey-free golf, which included birdies on holes No. 3 and No. 5, in addition to the opening hole. Scott had two bogeys, one birdie and three pars over his final six holes to finish 2-under-par (69).
Tim Wiedemeyer remained in the Top 20 after his second consecutive round of 71 (E). The sophomore is tied for 16th place after beginning the day tied for 19th. Ben Gregg and Connor Graham accounted for the Red Raiders' other two countable scores as Graham posted a 2-over-par 73 while Gregg was in the clubhouse with a 3-over-par 74. Both players reside in the Top 30.
Regional play concludes on Wednesday with the third and final round. All five Red Raiders will play their third round beginning from the 10th tee, Charlie DeLong will start the Red Raiders' day at 8:33 a.m. CDT.
