CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 24 Texas Tech men's golf team completed the first round of the NCAA Championship tied for 12th place on Friday at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. The 30 teams competing for a national championship have 36 holes remaining, between rounds two and three this weekend, to position themselves for a spot in the Top 15 to make the first cut.
Senior Charlie DeLong, one of two Red Raiders to make a return trip to Carlsbad from 2024, led Texas Tech in the opening round by shooting a 1-under-par 71. He sits tied for 25th place out of the 155 golfers that competed on Friday.
The under-par performance was DeLong's 13th of the season, second-most on the team, and his first since the final round of the Big 12 Championship. DeLong shot even-par on the front nine, which consisted of a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys - he dropped to even-par after sinking a birdie on the 203-yard par 3, eighth hole, after sticking his tee shot within four feet of the cup. On the back nine, he birdied No. 11, a par-4, before back-to-back bogeys on holes 13 and 14 and then back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16. The 16th hole was another birdie on a par-3, DeLong finished 2-under-par on the course's four par-3 holes on Friday.
In his first career round of an NCAA Championship, freshman Connor Graham carded an even-par 72 for his team-leading 25th round posted par or better this season. With one of the two Red Raider scorecards recorded par or better in round one, Graham sits tied for 39th place at the end of Friday's first round.
Like DeLong, as well as Graham, sophomore Tim Wiedemeyer had bogeys on holes 13 and 14, both par-4s. Hole No. 13 is 428 yards, while No. 14 is 517 yards. Wiedemeyer was 1-under-par through his first 12 holes before the two blemishes. Wiedemeyer finished his first round with four straight pars to finish his first career NCAA Championship round 1-over-par (73).Â
Sophomore Ben Gregg accounted for the fourth and final countable score, a 4-over-par 76. Senior Calum Scott was in position through the first 14 holes to have a countable score at even-par, but a pair of drops from landing in a water hazard twice on the same hole led to a nine on the par-4, 15th hole. Scott finished with a 5-over-par 77 after knocking in three straight pars to finish his first round.
Texas Tech will be part of the afternoon wave on Saturday, meaning the second 15 teams to tee off in round two after the 15 other teams in action start in the morning. Graham is scheduled to lead off the Red Raiders once again; his round two tee time is set for 12:12 p.m. PDT.
