
No. 24 Texas Tech remains in the hunt at NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 24 Texas Tech men's golf team dropped into 19th place after Saturday's second round at the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. With a bunched field, the Red Raiders rose as high as 11th place with three holes remaining during Saturday's second round but dropped six shots and fell into 19th when the final scores were tallied between the 30 competitors.

Texas Tech will have 18 holes guaranteed left to play this season, on Sunday, and remain in the hunt to extend its season for 18 more on Monday should the Red Raiders climb into the Top 15 after the third round. Texas Tech (+14) sits two shots behind a three-way tie for 15th place (+12) between Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Texas A&M, and three shots back of a three-way tie for 12th place (+11) between Colorado, Pepperdine, and Georgia Tech. Virginia (+10) is in 11th place and the Red Raiders sit six shots back from the Top 10 with Cal (+8) holding on to 10th place.

Freshman Connor Graham, who was named to the PING All-Region Team earlier on Saturday morning, leads the Red Raiders after 36 holes at 3-over-par (147). Graham shot 3-over 75 on Saturday and sits in a tie for 55th among the 146 players who have played 36 holes.

Senior Calum Scott bounced back from Friday's opening round to shoot Texas Tech's top score on Saturday, a 1-under-par 71. Scott ended his second round with a birdie on his final hole to drop below par. Scott has played strong golf for the Red Raiders at the championship outside of one hole (No. 15) in the first round where he logged a nine after finding the water twice. Ben Gregg sits one shot behind Scott at 5-over-par (149) after improving by three strokes in his second round by shooting a 1-over-par 73. Scott is tied for 62nd while Gregg is tied for 78th.

Texas Tech's quest to extend its season begins at 12:12 p.m. PDT off of hole No. 10. Round three tee times were reshuffled after the first 36 holes to regroup teams by scores, which placed the teams holding rank No. 1-15 to play in the morning while teams that rank No. 16-30 to start in the afternoon. The Red Raiders will be grouped with South Carolina (+19), 20th place, and Georgia (+21), 21st place, in the third round. Teams who are ranked 16-30 after Sunday's third round will be cut leading into Monday's fourth round which pits 15 teams together battling for the final eight spots for the match play portion of the NCAA Championships that starts on Tuesday.
