Tory Stephens was appointed Director of the Strength and Conditioning and Nutrition program by Athletics Director Kirby Hocutt in the fall of 2011 and promoted to Assistant Athletic Director/Director of S &C in 2016 overseeing all 17 sports at Texas Tech.
Stephens, who began his career with Tech while he was an undergraduate student, spent six years (2004-2010) years as Associate Head Strength Coach and Director of Sports Nutrition prior to the promotions by Hocutt. He currently serves as the S&C coach for the Texas Tech baseball team, which has won three Big 12 titles in four years and advanced to the College World Series four of the last six seaons.
Stephens received his Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coach certification (SCCC) in the organization's inaugural year of 2001. In May of 2010 he was awarded the prestigious title of Master Strength & Conditioning Coach by the CSCCa, which is the highest honor and distinction a professional or collegiate strength and conditioning coach can receive. In Texas Tech's TechSpy Awards, Stephens has received the athletic department's administrator of the year award, which is voted by student-athletes.
Stephens recently published and article for Training & Conditioning magazine and Coaching Management. The article explains in depth, the four-block off-season program he implements with the Texas Tech baseball team, which was presented at the THSBCA state convention.
He received his Exercise and Sports Science degree from Texas Tech in 1998. He was a three-year letterman in football, baseball and track & field during an outstanding prep career at Sweetwater High School in Texas. He was 3-time All-District football player and was chosen to the All-West Texas, All-South Plains, and All-State football teams. He was also a 3-time All-District and an All-state selection as catcher in baseball.
Stephens and his wife, Trisha, are the proud parents of two sons, Trey and Trevor, and a daughter, Tatum. In his spare time, he enjoys coaching his son's select baseball team, hunting, fishing, and anything that involves his family and kids.
