John Reilly is in his fifth season as the head strength and conditioning coach with the men’s basketball program. He oversees all aspects of the team’s workout and strength training.
Before Texas Tech, Reilly held the same position at North Carolina Central University in Durham. He supervised the entire Olympic sports program upon his arrival in the fall of 2012 before being promoted to head strength coach for the football program in 2013 and the department’s head strength and conditioning coach in 2015. The Eagles came away consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff bids in 2014 and 2015.
Reilly helped the NCCU men’s basketball team win the program’s first Division I regular season conference championship, conference tournament title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament during the 2013-14 season. The Eagles racked up 28 victories which was a single-season MEAC record.
Reilly began his career as a volunteer assistant strength coach at his alma mater BYU and Michigan. He also was a part of the football strength and conditioning staff at Texas from 2011-12. The Longhorns won the 2011 Holiday Bowl over California.
A native of Killeen, Texas, Reilly was a decathlete at BYU from 2008-11. He helped the Cougars capture the 2010 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Reilly served a mission in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 2005-07 prior to college. While serving the natives, he learned to read and speak fluent Portuguese.
Reilly is a certified collegiate strength coach from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, CPR certified, and a USA Weightlifting Level I sport performance coach. He gives gratitude to Coach Jeff Madden, George Smith, Bennie Wylie, Donnie Maib, Mike Favre, Bo Sandoval and Brandon Johnson for providing guidance in both personal and professional development in the field of strength and conditioning.
Reilly earned his Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from BYU in 2011. He is married to the former Jessica Goldbold. The couple has three children: Preslyn, Sienna, and John.
