LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech men's and women's cross country teams travel to Stillwater, Okla. this weekend for the 63rd annual Cowboy Jamboree Cross Country meet, hosted by Oklahoma State University.
The meet gives the Red Raiders their best chance so far this season to compete agianst top flight competition. On the women's side Leigh Daniel will be a prohibitive favorite as she looks to remain undefeated for the season. Daniel was named Big 12 runner of the week this week after her victory in a near record setting time of 16:52 at the Sundodger Invitational last Saturday in Seattle. The women's team finished in a tie for second place at last weekend's meet. Other top teams scheduled to compete for the women include nationally ranked Baylor and Adams State, the seven-time Division II national champion.
The men will have a tough test on their hands as they look to improve on their sixth place finish at the Sundodger Invitational. They will face the Arkansas men, ranked No. 1 in the country and Oklahoma State (No. 24) as well as Big 12 foes Baylor and Oklahoma. Abilene Christian, the No.2 ranked team in Division II will also be in attendance.
The top runner for the men in both races this season has been Boniface Ndungu, a transfer from Dodge City Community College. Ndungu finished eighth at the Seattle meet with a time of 25:26.
"It's going to be a meet with some tough competition. I was pleased with how the guys ran last week but we've still got a ways to go. Leigh ran real well in Seattle. I was happy with the other runners but we still have to gear it up and take that next step."
The women's 5K race is scheduled to start at 9:10 a.m. with the men's 8K following at 9:40.
