This is his first collegiate head coaching stint.
SERIES
Baylor leads the series 32-24-1. The Red Raiders have won the last three meetings, dating back to the 1996 season. Baylor leads the series 19-6 in Waco, while Tech holds a 18-13-1 advantage in Lubbock. The Red Raiders won last season?s meeting 31-29. RADIO The All Sports Radio Network is in its fourth season of broadcasting Texas Tech football games on a network basis. The 22-station network covers the state of Texas and Eastern New Mexico. The Roaring Twenties
Texas Tech?s series with Baylor is one of just three represented on this year?s schedule which dates back to the 20th century?s ?Roaring? decade. Tech and the Bears began playing in 1929 and have met 57 times since. Baylor leads the series 32-24-1.
In the Nineties
Texas Tech has won six of the nine meetings in the series during the 1990s, including victories in the last three in a row.
In Waco
The Red Raiders and the Bears have played 25 times in Waco, with Baylor winning 19 of those games.
Home and Away
The game at Baylor will be the first of two consecutive on the road for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are 1-2 on the road this season, with a win at Louisiana-Lafayette and losses at Arizona State and Oklahoma State. After playing host to Tech this week, Baylor heads on the road for two straight games. The Bears are 1-2 at home this year.
Last Time vs. Baylor
Texas Tech led 31-16 with just under seven minutes to play and then held on for a 31-29 victory over Baylor at Jones Stadium last year. Rob Peters completed 10 of 15 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown for Tech, while Derek Dorris hauled in four passes for 58 yards. Ricky Williams ran for 159 yards and two TDs in the victory.
Tech-Baylor Series Tidbits
There have been no games played at neutral sites ? Baylor won the first game in the series, 34-0, in 1929 in Waco ? Rob Peters registered 332 yards total offense in last year?s game ? the Red Raiders rolled up 624 yards total yards in the 1996 game, including 482 rushing.
Home Crowds
Last week?s attendance of 46,242 increased Texas Tech?s three-game home total to 145,579, an average of 48,526. The Red Raiders would need to average 42,000 fans in the final two home games of the year to set a new single-season record for average attendance. The current record for average attendance was set in 1979 when an average of 46,083 filled Jones Stadium over six games.
Shaud for the Record
True freshman Shaud Williams ran for 230 yards and two touchdowns on just 21 carries last week against Colorado, setting a Texas Tech record for single-game rushing yards by a freshman. The previous mark was 204 yards by Cliff Hoskins against Baylor in 1972.
Below The Average
With all the attention focused on Tech runners following the Colorado win, it was almost overlooked that the Swarm defense limited a Colorado offense which was seventh in the nation in scoring and 10th in total offense to 29.6 points and 114.6 yards under its average in the 31-10 victory.
Only Four Better?10 Times
There have been just four Texas Tech running backs on 10 separate occasions to accumulate more yards in a game than Shaud Williams? 230 yard performance last week against Colorado. Byron Hanspard holds the single-game record, posting 287 against Baylor in 1996. Following are the top 11 single-game rushing performances in Tech football history.
Yds | Player | Opponent | Date |
287 | Byron Hanspard | Baylor | 10-5-96 |
280 | James Gray | Duke | 12-28-89 |
272 | Byron Hanspard | Oklahoma St. | 9-7-96 |
268 | James Hadnot | New Mexico | 10-14-78 |
260 | Byron Hanspard | Air Force | 12-27-95 |
257 | Byron Hanspard | SW Louisiana | 11-16-96 |
251 | Ricky Williams | UTEP | 9-5-98 |
244 | Ricky Williams | Fresno St. | 9-19-98 |
234 | James Gray | Arizona | 9-9-89 |
232 | James Gray | SMU | 11-1-89 |
230 | Shaud Williams | Colorado | 11-16-99 |
Off and Running
Texas Tech?s 279 yards rushing against Colorado last week represented a season high in that category for the Red Raiders. Tech?s previous high this season was 227 yards against Louisiana-Lafayette.
Curtis Making All-Star Bid
Free safety Kevin Curtis has established himself as a legitimate all-star candidate in just his sophomore season at Tech. Last week in the Red Raiders win over Colorado Curtis rang up 20 (11 solo) total tackles, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble. On the season, Curtis leads Tech tacklers with 72. He has recorded three of Texas Tech?s eight double-digit tackle games this season, including the top three.
60 Over Three
Senior quarterback Rob Peters has completed 60% of his passing attempts over the last three games, and that includes a 7-for-18 night at Oklahoma State. Throwing out the OSU game, Peters has completed 28 of his last 41 attempts (68%).
Peters Moving Up
Senior quarterback Rob Peters? 181 yards passing against Colorado last week moved him to eight on the Texas Tech career passing yards list. Peters now has 2,437 yards and moved past Charles Napper (1969-71), Joe Barnes (1971-73) and Rodney Allison (1974-77) last week. Peters needs 164 yards to move past Jim Hart (1979-83) into seventh.
Player | Yards | Years |
Robert Hall | 7,908 | 1990-93 |
Zebbie Lethridge | 6,789 | 1994-97 |
Billy Joe Tolliver | 6,756 | 1985-88 |
Ron Reeves | 4,688 | 1978-81 |
Jamie Gill | 3,280 | 1988-91 |
Tom Wilson | 2,932 | 1963-65 |
Jim Hart | 2,600 | 1979-83 |
Rob Peters | 2,437 | 1996-A |
Rodney Allison | 2,411 | 1974-77 |
Joe Barnes | 2,330 | 1971-73 |
In the Red Zone
Texas Tech has been productive this season once the Red Raiders move inside opponents? 20-yard lines, converting four times on four trips against Colorado. In 15 trips, Tech has converted 11 times, 10 of those touchdowns. One of the two times the Red Raiders didn?t convert was to run out the clock at Louisiana-Lafayette. The other two were lost fumbles.
After October 10
If history is an indicator, Red Raider fans should get ready for a productive stretch run in the 1999 season. Under head coach Spike Dykes, Texas Tech is 49-21-1 in games after October 10.
Goodner?s Waco Connection
Texas Tech defensive coordinator John Goodner spent 11 seasons coaching at Baylor (1982-92) prior to coming to Lubbock. During his tenure in Waco, Goodner helped produce six All-America selections on defense and 34 all-conference picks on the defensive side of the ball.
Turning Over a New Leaf
The Texas Tech defense almost doubled its take-away totals for the season with six against Colorado last week. The Swarm forced four Buff fumbles and intercepted two passes. Coming into the game, Texas Tech had registered just seven take-aways.
More Than Double
While the Red Raiders were only able to manage a touchdown and a field goal following Colorado turnovers, the 10 points off miscues was three more than Tech had converted on in the previous five games this season.
Behind The Line
Texas Tech defenders have been regular visitors in opposing backfields this year. The Swarm made six stops behind the line of scrimmage last week (three sacks and three tackles for loss) against Colorado, increasing the season total to 29 after six games.
Nighty Night
Saturday?s game at Baylor will be the sixth time Texas Tech has played a night game this season. Last week?s victory over Colorado is the only time the Red Raiders have played under natural light this season.
Double Digit Stops
The Swarm defense had two players who posted double-digit tackles against Colorado last week, marking the fifth time in six games Tech has had a double-figure tackler. Free safety Kevin Curtis rang up 20 tackles and defensive end Taurus Rucker followed with 12. Following is a list of 1999 Swarm double-digit tacklers:
Player | No. | Opponent |
Kevin Curtis | 20 | Colorado |
Kevin Curtis | 17 | Arizona State |
Kevin Curtis | 13 | UL-Lafayette |
Tim Duffie | 12 | North Texas |
Kris Kocurek | 12 | North Texas |
Taurus Rucker | 12 | Colorado |
Kyle Shipley | 12 | Texas A&M |
Reagan Bownds | 10 | Arizona State |
Inside The 20
Despite battling high winds most of the day, Texas Tech punter Eric Rosiles dropped three punts inside the Colorado 20 yard line last week to improve his six-game total of punts dropped inside the opposition?s 20-yard line to eight.
Bouncing Back
Last week?s win over Colorado marked the 38th win in the next game following a loss under Coach Spike Dykes. The Red Raiders have lost back-to-back Big 12 Conference games only once.
Homecoming Hangover?
Last week?s 31-10 victory over Colorado marked Texas Tech?s eighth consecutive Homecoming victory. Following those seven previous wins the Red Raiders are 3-4.
Surgically Speaking
Texas Tech tight end/fullback Kyle Allamon and backup quarterback Kliff Kingsbury both underwent surgery last week to internally repair fractures suffered in the game at Oklahoma State. Allamon suffered a broken left elbow and Kingsbury a broken left thumb. Both are out indefinitely.
Coming Back
While Allamon and Kingsbury weren?t dressed for Tech win over Colorado, cornerback Oscar Solis and Jason May returned for the first time in over a month. Solis had been sidelined with an ankle injury since the second game of the season, while May had been out nursing a knee injury since the second series of the year.
Career Day For Baker
Wide receiver Tim Bakers? 95 yards on four receptions against Colorado was a career best for receiving yards in a game for the junior from Borger, Texas. His previous best was 71 yards against Louisiana-Lafayette earlier this season.
You Want Fries With That?
Tech outside linebacker Keith Cockrum has been named as one of the 1999 Burger King College Football Scholar Athletes. Cockrum, a triple major in the school of Business, has posted a perfect 4.0 over the last eight semesters (since he has come to TTU).
Down on the Farm
Senior Raider Reagan Bownds has been named to the All-America Farm Team by Successful Farming magazine. A world champion goat roper from Eldorado, Texas, Bownds has 32 tackles this season and 177 in his career at Texas Tech.
Readin? and Writin? and ?Rithmatic
Texas Tech boasts seven players who have posted at least a 3.0 grade point average for six consecutive semesters and all seven contribute on the field as well. Topping that list is Raider Keith Cockrum, who has earned a perfect 4.0 for eight consecutive semesters and center Kyle Sanders who has a perfect 4.0 for six straight semesters.

Academic All-Conference
Texas Tech had the second-most Academic All-Big 12 first team selections last season with 14. First team selections are regular players who posted at least a 3.2 grade point average. The list of academic all-conference selections can be found on page 141 of the 1999 Big 12 Football Media Guide.
Separated, Not Slowed
Defensive lineman Kris Kocurek wasn?t about to let anything as trivial as a second degree shoulder separation stop him from showing up big for Homecoming last week. Playing through the injury, the junior from Caldwell, Texas posted six tackles, caused a fumble, recovered a fumble, sacked the CU quarterback and broke up a pass. Pretty solid days? work for a man with a broken wing.
Rocky Mountain High
Senior defensive end Taurus Rucker tied a career-high with 12 tackles last week against Colorado. The Denison, Texas native also recorded a tackle for loss (-5) and broke up a pass.
Against Big 12 Reps From Texas
Coming into the game at Baylor, Texas Tech has posted an all-time 62-29-1 record against Big 12 members from the state of Texas.
Keeping Them at Home
A quick glance at preseason rosters from Texas Tech and Baylor shows 186 players from the state of Texas on the combined rosters. Tech boasted 88 from the Lone Star state and Baylor 98.
Dean of Big 12
Coach Spike Dykes is the dean of Big 12 head coaches, in his 13th season at the controls of the Red Raider program. Kansas State coach Bill Snyder and Texas A&M coach R.C. Slocum are next on the list, both having been with their programs for 10 years.
The Last Time Out
Texas Tech won its eighth straight Homecoming game, 31-10, over Colorado.
Next Week
Texas Tech concludes a two-game road swing by traveling to Missouri for a Big 12 matchup.
Come Back Anytime John
Media Relations student assistant Chad Conine says that the Red Raiders are now 12-1 in games when his father, John, is in attendance. Conine, by the way, is from Waco.
