LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech football team went natural Tuesday and returned to grass as preparations continued for Saturday?s Big 12 Conference matchup at Baylor with a two-hour drill in shoulder pads and helmets.
Tuesday?s practice marked the first time the Red Raiders had worked on the grass practice fields just Southeast of Jones Stadium since early September. Texas Tech hasn?t played on real grass since winning at Louisiana-Lafayette Sept. 11.
?We just need to keep on keeping on, keep on bouncing? head coach Spike Dykes said. ?This is the time of the season when the way you work out every day is important. Everybody works out well early in the season, but it?s the folks who practice well from here on out who are successful.?
Dykes said the Red Raiders may practice on the grass fields at least one more time this week to prepare for the playing surface at Baylor?s Floyd Casey Stadium. Texas Tech is 1-1 on natural surfaces this year.
?We had good intensity and good concentration today,? Dykes said. ?We are starting to get some of our beat up guys back and that?s a good sign. Kris Kocurek (defensive tackle) and Jason May (offensive guard) both practiced today, so that puts us in a little better shape than we have been in.?
Texas Tech comes into the game 3-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Baylor is 1-5 and 0-3. There will be no television for the game, but it will be carried on the Texas Tech radio network on affiliates in Texas and New Mexico.
