LUBBOCK, Texas - Trying to shake up what can become a mundane practice routine at this point of the season, Spike Dykes said the Texas Tech football coaching staff added a couple of new twists to Tuesday?s practice on the grass fields just Southeast of Jones Stadium.
?We threw in about 15 minutes of offense vs. defense today and that revved up the players a little bit,? Dykes said. ?A certain amount of football is pure repetition and that gets a little old sometimes, so we try to break the routine a little bit at this time of the year.
?This is the time in a season when your leadership and team morale need to kick in,? Dykes said. ?Our guys are doing a great job maintaining their intensity and effort levels.?
With temperatures hovering around 80-degrees and the nearest clouds somewhere in New Mexico, the Red Raiders worked for about two hours in shells Tuesday. In addition to the break in the normal routine, Tech worked on the kicking game, some one-on-one drills and implementation of the game plan for Missouri.
?It was nothing to write home about, but we had good concentration,? Dykes said. ?When you have road games at this time of the year you need to be ready for anything. You can?t let things you can?t control effect how you play.?
Texas Tech (4-3, 3-1) plays its second consecutive road game at Missouri (3-4, 0-4) Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and there will be no television for the game.
