COACHES
Spike Dykes (Stephen F. Austin, ?59) is in his 13th season as head coach of the Red Raider football program. The ?Dean of the Big 12 Coaches,? Dykes has a career record of 80-66-1 at Tech. Dykes has served in his current position longer than any coach in school history. Dan McCarney (Iowa, ?75) is in his fifth season at Iowa State and fifth as a collegiate head coach. McCarney has an overall record of 13-39 at ISU.
SERIES
Texas Tech leads the series 3-0, dating back to the first game, a 52-0 Red Raider win on Sept. 23, 1967, in Lubbock. The two teams met in Ames for the first time last season. Tech won the game 31-24.
RADIO
The All Sports Radio Network is in its fourth season of broadcasting Texas Tech football games on a network basis. The 22-station network covers the state of Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Jack Dale (play-by-play) and John Harris (color) provide gameday coverage.
IN ESPANOL

Haven?t Played Much
The series with Iowa State is similar to the series with last week?s opponent Missouri. Although Texas Tech and Iowa State first played in 1967, there have been only three games in the series. The Red Raiders lead the series 3-0.
In Lubbock
This week?s game marks the third time Texas Tech and Iowa State have met in Lubbock. The Red Raiders won 52-0 in 1967 and 24-3 in 1974. Tech beat the Cyclones 31-24 last year in Ames.
Twice in 12
Saturday?s game marks the second time Texas Tech and Iowa State have played as members of the Big 12 Conference.
Back Home
Texas Tech plays at home for the first time since defeating Colorado Oct. 16 and for just the fourth time this season. The Red Raiders are 2-1 at Jones Stadium, losing to North Texas before defeating Texas A&M and Colorado.
Under Dykes at Home
Texas Tech is 51-24 at Jones Stadium under head coach Spike Dykes. The Red Raiders are 37-20 at home in the 90s.
Last Time vs. Iowa State
Texas Tech led early, gave up the lead, came back and stretched out the margin before holding off Iowa State for a 31-24 victory at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa. Ricky Williams ran for 105 yards on 29 carries and Donnie Hart caught five passes for 163 yards and a touchdown to lead the Red Raiders. ISU quarterback Todd Bandhauer passed for 230 yards and three TDs, connecting with Damien Groce 10 times for 116 yards and all three scores.
October Harvest
The month of October was a very productive one for Tech free safety Kevin Curtis. The sophomore from Lubbock-Coronado was in on 69 total tackles in the five games the Red Raiders played during the month. Twice Curtis tallied 20 stops, against Colorado and Missouri. He has combined to make 53 tackles in the last three games, an average of almost 18 per game. To ice the cake, Curtis also intercepted two passes and recovered two fumbles, returning one 86 yards for a touchdown at Missouri.
Home Crowds
A crowd of 46,242 in Tech?s last home game increased the three-game home total to 145,579, an average of 48,526. The Red Raiders would need to average 42,000 in the final two home games to set a new single-season record for average attendance. The current record was set in 1979 when an average of 46,083 visited Jones Stadium over six games.
Starting Repeaters
The Missouri game marked just the second time this season that Texas Tech had started the same lineup two games in a row on defense. The only other time the Red Raiders had that continuity was in the first two games of the season.
(Un)Common Opponents
Despite both being members of the Big 12 Conference, Texas Tech and Iowa State have played just two common opponents at this point in the 1999 season. Both the Red Raiders and the Cyclones have met Colorado and Missouri. Tech defeated Colorado (31-10) at Jones Stadium and lost last week at Missouri (34-7). Iowa State won at Missouri (24-21) and lost at home to Colorado (16-12).
Scovell Connection
Quarterback John Scovell was the hero when Texas Tech defeated Iowa State 52-0 back on Sept. 23, 1967. Scovell ran for three touchdowns and passed for another in the Red Raider win. Two of Scovell?s sons, King and Dupree, are current members of the Texas Tech football team. King, a sophomore receiver, has two receptions for 34 yards. Dupree is working as a squadman through a redshirt year.
Peters Climbing Charts
Senior quarterback Rob Peters continues to climb the Texas Tech career passing charts, moving into seventh with 160 yards at Missouri last week. Peters now has 2,654 yards and needs 279 yards passing to move past Tom Wilson (1963-65) into sixth.

Zebbie Lethridge | 6,789 | 1994-97 |

Touchdown Passes
Not only is quarterback Rob Peters moving up the career yardage list, he is also creeping up Tech?s career touchdown pass list with 18, putting him seventh on the list with four games to play. Peters needs five TD passes to move past Jamie Gill (1988-91) into sixth.
Down the Stretch
Under Spike Dykes Texas Tech has been a ?second-half? team, second half of the season, that is. Texas Tech 50-22-1 under Dykes in games played after October 10.
Double Digit Days
Four Texas Tech defenders posted double-digit tackles against Baylor last week, marking the seventh time in eight games Tech has had a double-figure tackler. Free safety Kevin Curtis rang up 20 tackles and linebacker Tim Duffie had 18, while Raiders Reagan Bownds and John Norman had 11 and 10, respectively. Career Day For Catfish
With Missouri running 91 offensive plays last week, safety Kevin Curtis wasn?t the only Red Raider to notch career tackle numbers at Memorial Stadium. Inside linebacker Tim Duffie notched a career-high 18 stops, 10 solo, against the Tigers.
Return Engagement
Outside linebacker and return man are not usually synonymous on a football roster, but John Norman makes it work fine. Norman has moved into the Texas Tech all-time top 10 for punt and kickoff returns. Norman is seventh on the career punt return yardage list with 460 and ninth on the return list with 45. His 729 kickoff return yards and 32 kickoff returns puts him eighth on both of those lists.
In Their Forties
A quartet of Texas Tech defenders have played in at least 40 games in their Red Raider careers. Linebacker Kyle Shipley and defensive end Taurus Rucker each played in their 41st career game at Missouri, while linebacker Tim Duffie and Raider Reagan Bownds played in their 40th in Columbia last weekend.
Experience Required?
Being long in the tooth is almost a requirement for admission to the SWARM. The 11 players who started on defense for Texas Tech against Baylor have a combined 343 games played between them, an average of just over 31 career games under their belts.
Career Games | Player | Pos |
41 | Kyle Shipley | ILB |

Even Stephen
Texas Tech an even 4-4 this season and coincidentally, the Red Raiders are also even on the scoreboard. Tech has scored 180 points and given up 180 after eight games.
Linebacker School
Texas Tech could boast the most learned linebacking starting corp in college football. Graduates and inside linebackers Tim Duffie and Kyle Shipley have already earned their degrees, while outside linebackers Keith Cockrum and Reagan Bownds have 4.0 and 3.61 grade point averages, respectively.
?Stability As Well
During Spike Dykes? 13-year tenure at Texas Tech there have been 31 head coaches at the other member institutions in the Big 12 Conference. Dykes? tenure at Tech is the seventh-longest among active coaches, trailing only Penn State?s Joe Paterno (33), BYU?s Lavell Edwards (27), Florida State?s Bobby Bowden (23), West Virginia?s Don Nehlen (19), Virginia?s George Welsh (17) and Fisher DeBerry of Air Force (15). Outside linebacker Keith Cockrum has added another academic award to his growing list, but the latest is the most prestigious to date.
