LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech swept the linebacker position and added an offensive player to boot by landing four players on the 1999 GTE Academic All-District VI football team announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association.
Linebackers Kyle Sanders, Keith Cockrum and Reagan Bownds were all named to the squad, as well as center Kyle Sanders. Rice and Texas Tech dominated the team, with the Owls placing five players on the squad and the Red Raiders four.
?We are extremely proud of these guys, because not only are they good football players, they are complete people,? Texas Tech head football coach Spike Dykes said. ?They are solid players, solid in the classroom and solid citizens. These kind of young men are the reason we get into this business.?
All four Texas Tech representatives to the team are also starters for the Red Raiders. Sanders has started every game and played every snap at center for Tech this season.
Shipley, a two-year starter at inside linebacker, is tied as the second-leading tackler on the Texas Tech squad with 78. Bownds and Cockrum both start at outside linebacker and have recorded 57 and 53 tackles, respectively.
To be eligible for the team a player must be a starter or front line reserve and must have at least a 3.20 overall grade point average. Sanders has a perfect 4.00 in History, Cockrum a perfect 4.00 in Management Info Systems/Finance/Economics, Bownds a 3.62 in Agribusiness and Shipley a 3.60 in the MBA/General Business program.
Players named to the all-district team are eligible for the national All-America team. The four players from Texas Tech were the only representatives from the Big 12 Conference on squad.
