RED RAIDERS BEGIN NEW ERA AGAINST INDIANA
Texas Tech officially begins the 1999-2000 season and a new era in Red Raiders athletics when it hosts Indiana in the first-ever game at the United Spirit Arena. Friday?s game is set to tip-off at 8:05 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN.
HEAD COACH JAMES DICKEY
Texas Tech Head Coach James Dickey is entering his ninth season as the Red Raider mentor with a 145-89 overall record. Dickey has guided the Red Raiders to two NCAA Tournaments, including 1996?s Sweet Sixteen appearance. Tech also has made a trip to the NIT under Dickey. He is third all-time at the University with 145 wins, trailing Gerald Myers (326 wins / 1971-91) and Polk Robison (254 wins / 1942-46, 47-61). The Red Raiders won the Southwest Conference regular-season title in 1995 and tied for the honor the following season. He became only the second coach in Texas Tech history to take a team through an undefeated conference season, when the Red Raiders finished 14-0 in the final season of the Southwest Conference in 1996. He also holds the distinction of the being the only coach in school history to record a 30-win season (1995-96). He is a two-time Southwest Conference Coach of the Year.
DICKEY IN SEASON OPENERS
Texas Tech head coach James Dickey is 5-3 all-time in season openers. He has won four of the last five.
THE INDIANA HOOSIERS
Indiana finished the 1998-99 season with a 23-11 mark and a 9-1 Big Ten record. The Hoosiers advanced to the first round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, losing to St. John?s 86-61. Leading scorer Luke Recker is gone from last season?s squad, but IU coach Bob Knight returns one of the nation?s top guards in A.J. Guyton. The 6-1, 175-pound senior finished with 16 points per game, the only other Hoosier besides Recker to score over 10 a game.
In two preseason exhibition games this season, the Hoosiers knocked off Athletes in Action (100-85) and Marathon Oil (105-78). Sophomore forward Kirk Haston led Indiana with 16 points per game over the two games, while Larry Richardson came off the bench to average 15 points. IU ran up the tally with 102.5 points per game, shooting 64.2 percent from the field.
INDIANA HEAD COACH BOB KNIGHT
One of the most recognizable figures in the history of collegiate basketball, Indiana head coach Bob Knight has made an impact on the sport for 34 seasons as a head coach. He has amassed a 743-281 record during that span, including a 641-231 mark in 28 seasons at Indiana. He has guided the Hoosiers to three NCAA Championship titles, the last coming in 1987.
THIS SEASON MARKS 75th IN PROGRAM'S HISTORY
The 1999-2000 season is the 75th in the history of the Red Raiders men?s basketball program. The school began the program prior to the 1925-26 season. Tech?s first game was a 37-25 loss to Daniel Baker on Jan. 25, 1926. The first win was a 35-21 victory at Sul Ross State on Feb. 4 of the same season. During Texas Tech?s previous 74 season, the Red Raiders hold an overall record of 1,079-806 (.572).
BACK TO 1900
Despite the rapid approach of the upcoming millennium, Texas Tech is not quite on course to play its 2,000th game in the program?s history. The Red Raiders? home game against Texas on Jan. 22 will mark the 1900th game in the 75-year history of the program.
WINNING IN THE 90s
Texas Tech has won 153 of 283 games (54.1 percent) played so far this decade. The winningest decade came during the 70s when the Red Raiders won 174 games. Here?s a rundown of the top five decades for wins: 1970s (174), 1980s (153), 1990s (153), 1950s (146), 1940s (143).
