LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech led all teams from the Big 12 Conference South Division by having 24 players named to the 1999 Football Academic All-Big 12 Team. The Red Raiders placed 17 players on the squad?s first team and seven more on the second team.
Texas Tech outside linebacker Keith Cockrum and quarterback Rob Peters are among 11 players named to the academic team for the fourth time in their careers. Peters is just one of four players in the Big 12 to make the team while in graduate school.
Cockrum and Red Raider center Kyle Sanders are two of just five players who made the team with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Both Cockrum, a senior, and Sanders, a junior, have earned a perfect GPA for their entire collegiate careers.
First-team members of the squad consists of those players who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade point average, while the second-team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, a player must maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher either cumulative or over the previous two semesters and must have participated in 60-percent of the team?s scheduled contests. Freshmen or transfer students are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Only Nebraska placed more members on the team. The Cornhuskers had 23 first team members and eight on the second team. Following are Texas Tech?s selections to the Academic All-Big 12 Team:
