LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech placed three players on the Dallas Morning News All-Big 12 Football Team, which was released in today?s edition. Free safety Kevin Curtis and offensive tackle Jonathan Gray were named to the first team, while running back Sammy Morris was tabbed as a member of the second unit.
Curtis, a sophomore from Lubbock-Coronado, led Texas Tech defenders with 153 tackles, a team-high 93 of them solo stops. He also recorded three tackles for loss (-11), intercepted three passes and recovered three fumbles. Curtis was named as a second-team all-conference performer by Big 12 coaches.
Gray, a junior from Lubbock-Estacado, started every game for a Texas Tech offense that endured several lineup changes due to injury. He graded over 90-percent through that 11-game stretch, often dominating opposing defenders. Gray was a second-team selection by league coaches.
Morris, a senior from San Antonio-Jay, led the Red Raiders in all-purpose yardage. He racked up 948 yards, 562 rushing and 386 receiving, for an average of 105.3 yards per game. He finished third on the team in scoring with five touchdowns and one two-point conversion. Morris was also a second-team all-conference pick by Big 12 coaches.
Other Red Raiders earning post-season honors to date include senior offensive guard Curtis Lowery (Stephenville), senior defensive end Taurus Rucker (Denison), junior defensive tackle Kris Kocurek (Caldwell), senior tight end Kyle Allamon (Lubbock-Monterey), senior linebacker Kyle Shipley (Arlington), senior cornerback Anthony Malbrough (Beaumont-West Brook) and return man John Norman (Midland-Lee).
Big 12 coaches selected Lowery, Rucker and Kocurek to the second-team all-conference squad. Allamon was a third-team selection, while Shipley, Malbrough and Norman garnered honorable mentions.
