LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head football coach Mike Leach continued to round out his offensive staff by naming Robert Anae as offensive line coach Wednesday. Anae is the fourth coach named to Leach?s new Red Raider staff.
?It goes without saying that we are pleased to have Robert on our staff,? Leach said. ?Anyone who knows football knows how important it is to be sound up front and I believe Coach Anae is the man to make us sound.?
Anae joins defensive coordinator and associate head coach Greg McMackin, special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Manny Matsakis and wide receivers coach Sonny Dykes as the first members of Leach?s new staff.
Anae, an all-conference offensive lineman on the 1984 BYU national championship team, comes to Texas Tech from Brigham Young where he served the last year as assistant director of the Student-Athlete Center. In that role he directed academics and served as the NCAA Life Skills Director.
He served as running game coordinator and offensive line coach at Nevada-Las Vegas during the 1997-98 seasons. Prior coaching stops include coaching offensive line at Boise State (1995-96), offensive coordinator at Ricks (Idaho) Junior College (1992-94), as well as working with the offensive lines at BYU (1990-92) and Hawaii (1986-87). Anae also coached at his high school alma mater, Kahuku High in Hawaii in 1988-89.
?I am really looking forward to getting the opportunity to coach football in Texas, particularly in West Texas,? Anae said. ?Everybody knows Texas is where football was perfected and I am honored to get a chance to work at Texas Tech where there is already a solid foundation.?
In addition to being a part of a national championship team at BYU, Anae also helped the Cougars win four Western Athletic Conference titles and play in four Holiday Bowl games. He finished his BYU career by playing in the Hula Bowl.
Anae finished his undergraduate work at BYU in political science before earning a Master?s in sociology at Hawaii and a Ph.D. in sociology at BYU.
He and his wife of 12 years, Liane, are the parents of two boys, Famika (11) and Max (4) and one daughter, Penny (10).
