LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Volleyball Weekly Press Conference Jeff Nelson Monday, November 16, 1998
On last weekend against Colorado and Nebraska: "Unfortunately we didnt win at Colorado but we played as well as weve played all year. We hit over .300 for the first two games. We put up some good numbers. Lori Garber and Courtney Putnam both hit extremely well and Lisa Hilgers had 71 assists. We came out a little slow after the first two games. Colorado came out aggressive and we didnt match their aggression. We kind of panicked and started looking for ways to score. It was a good match for us. We were pretty well matched for us but we didnt stay in our game which is to pass the ball near the net and let our hitters do the job. Saturday night at Nebraska was senior night. The match was sold out a week ahead and their fans were really into. It was a great place to play- good experience for us going into the NCAA Tournament. It was loud. Every time they scored a point, they stood and cheered all 5,000 of their fans. We played a good match. I was actually happy with what we did there. Theyre big, fast and very good and we dont match up very well with them. We battled well and kept them on the court for an hour and 45 minutes. That will help us prepare with whats ahead. Overall, Im pleased with what we did for the weekend even though we didnt win. Weve already played through the toughest part of our schedule. We have four matches left. We feel we can win out. Three of the teams weve already beaten 3-0 and then weve got Kansas State, who we feel we have a chance against."
On the upcoming week: "Wednesday we play Baylor- our last home match in the Coliseum forever. Its also our last home match for our seniors- Lisa Hilgers, Kristen Holmes, Kim Breitbach and Sonia Moric along with Pam Osterfeld who will graduate in December. We will honor all five of them. This will be a tough match for me. They have been my first recruiting class and theyve really done a great job for us. When theyre done they will have won over 90 matches in four years and they have been consistent and have represented Texas Tech real well. We hope people will come out and give them a real good send-off. Were doing it Wednesday night in the Coliseum because we gave them the choice. Friday we host Kansas State at the Civic Center due to a scheduling conflict with the Coliseum. Theyre very good and theyve been playing well lately."
On the rest of the season (four matches remaining): "Were really excited. For a month and a half now, weve been playing good volleyball. The team has set a goal to go out and win the next four matches to help us get where we want to be. I think were going to have a good last couple of week, finish strong and get into the tournament."
