Katelyn Cochran records 1,000 career assists
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (10-19, 2-15) fell to Houston (9-19, 2-15) in five sets on Thanksgiving Eve. This was the Red Raiders' 10th five-set match of the season and their fourth in the last five matches.
The Red Raiders recorded their fifth match this season with 10 or more aces, spearheaded by Sierra Grizzle's five aces — the third time she has reached that mark this year. Kalli Jioshvili Ravva posted her ninth double-double of the season and third straight after finishing with 14 kills and 14 digs.
Katelyn Cochran notched her second double-double of the year, recording 35 assists and 13 digs as she eclipsed 1,000 career assists. Freshmen Maddie Smotherman and Shelby Ignash also recorded career highs, with Smotherman totaling 10 digs and Ignash adding 10 kills.
Addie Kanouff was extremely efficient, finishing with 13 kills while hitting .444, while Reagan Engler added nine kills to round out Tech's major offensive contributors.
Houston controlled the net, posting 19 blocks — tied for the fourth most in program history — and held Tech to under a .100 hitting percentage.
How It Happened:
Set 1:
Houston executed its blocking game plan early, recording five blocks by the media timeout while building a 15-10 lead and holding Tech to a negative hitting percentage. The Cougars continued to control the frame, extending the lead to 18-10 and taking the set 25-13 with seven total blocks.
Set 2:
Tech slowed Houston's block in the second set, limiting the Cougars to three. The Red Raiders broke an 11-11 tie with a 6-2 run to force a Houston timeout. The Cougars pulled within 21-19, but a 4-0 Red Raider run closed the set and tied the match, 1-1.
Set 3:
Tech jumped out to an 8-2 start, forcing an early Cougar timeout. At 13-4, Houston had earned only one point on its own, with three coming from Tech errors. The Red Raiders controlled the set with four aces and 12 kills, cruising to a 25-13 win and a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4:
The fourth set was back-and-forth until the Cougars used a 7-1 run to pull ahead 18-17 and ultimately take the set, forcing a decisive fifth frame. Houston rediscovered its block, adding six more to bring its match total to 18 entering set five.
Set 5:
Houston maintained a three-point cushion for most of the final set as Tech struggled to string together a run. The Red Raiders called timeout down 13-10, but the Cougars closed out the match with a 15-12 victory.
UP NEXT: Texas Tech will host Utah on Saturday at 1 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders will also celebrate Senior Day.
