LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 24 Texas Tech volleyball team defeated Oklahoma 15-9, 15-8, 15-7 Friday evening at Lubbocks Municipal Coliseum. The victory improves No. 24 Texas Tech to 18-8 on the season and 7-6 in the Big 12 Conference while Oklahoma falls to 8-17 and 2-11. Tech is next in action tomorrow, Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Lubbock Municipal Coliseum against Kansas.
"It was a good win for us," Texas Tech head coach Jeff Nelson said. "Oklahoma is a good team. They have some good hitters. They are a real good serving team- they probably are the toughest serving team weve seen all year. We did a good job of controlling their serves and we passed well. I was proud that we played well."
Texas Tech limited Oklahoma to .113 hitting (36-23-115) and outblocked the Sooners 14-7. The Red Raiders jumped on top first with a 15-9 win in game one followed by a 15-8 win in game two.
"After game two, I was nervous that wed have a letdown," Nelson said. "After the second game we talked about that in the lockerroom. We said the game was slow and that we had to generate our own intensity. Then we did a good job and came out and played even better in game three."
Junior Lori Garber led Texas Tech with a match-high 12 kills. The 6-3 middle blocker hit .625 (12-2-16). It was her second best hitting outing of the season (her best came against Central Michigan when she hit .833). Senior outside hitter Kristen Holmes finished with 11 kills, a .429 hitting percentage (11-2-21) and 10 digs.
Junior outside hitter Courtney Putnam contributed eight kills and 11 digs, senior middle blocker Sonia Moric finished with eight kills and seven blocks (two solos), senior setter Lisa Hilgers finished with a match-high 15 digs and 43 assists and sophomore Heather Hughes added nine digs and seven kills.
"Lori Garber had a great match both blocking and hitting," Nelson said. "Lisa Hilgers played outstanding defense, Kristen Holmes was awesome tonight both offensively and defensively. We did a real good job all around. Our blocking was awesome."
The Red Raiders outblocked the Sooners 14-7 and outdug Oklahoma 53-39. The victory marked the first win against Oklahoma in the past three matchups. Oklahoma defeated Texas Tech 3-2 and 3-0 last year.
Oklahoma was led by Holly McMillians nine kills and Meredith Van Horns 11 digs.
