LUBBOCK, Texas - Registration has begun for the fifth annual Spring Fling grass volleyball tournament, sponsored by the Texas Tech volleyball program. The tournament will take place Saturday, May 1 on the Texas Tech University campus located at the corner of 6th & University.
The tournament will sponsor 10 different competition divisions. Among those divisions include Corporate A (Advanced Co-ed 4's), Corporate B (Novice Co-ed 4's), Men's Open (2-man), Women's Open (2-man), Men's A (2-man), Youth 18&Under (2-man), Youth 15&Under (2-man), Co-ed 4's, Student Organizations (Co-ed 4's) and Church Organizations (Co-ed 6's). Cost for the event is $15 per player in advance and $20 at the tournament site. The deadline for early registration is April 28th.
Texas Tech volleyball coach Jeff Nelson is expecting near 100 teams in the 25-court event.
"We are extremely excited for this year's Spring Fling," Nelson said. "Last year we had a great turnout in 108 teams and over 400 participants. We have an outstanding group of sponsors and we hope to have more participants this year. It should be a fun day for all.
The purpose of the Spring Fling tournament is to raise money for the Texas Tech women's athletic/volleyball booster program. Corporate sponsors for the event include KMMX Radio/Mix 100.3, KLLL, Aalon Salon, Cox Communications and Powerade. In addition to the volleyball tournament, over $5,000 in cash and prizes will be given away including two roundtrip tickets in the United States on Continental along with a Texas Rangers baseball package (airfare, game tickets, hotel) by Excel Travel.
