Texas Tech Men's Tennis Defeats Kansas

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 28th ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team defeated Kansas University 5-2 today at the Lubbock High School Courts. With the win, Texas Tech improves to 14-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play this season. The Red Raiders also earn the fourth seed in the Big 12 tournament to be held April 29 - May 2 in College Station; the highest seed ever for a Texas Tech team at the event.
Texas Tech opened the match strong taking the doubles point. At the No. 1 position, Adam Baranowski and Jevgenij Cariov defeated Ed Dos and Kenny Powell 8-4, while Petar Danolic and Borut Martincevic beat Luis Uribe and Alex Barragan 8-6 at the No. 2 to clinch the point. The No. 3 duo of Dustin Hawk and Kenny Powell fell to Rodrigo Echagary and Quentin Blakeney 8-6.
The Red Raiders did not let the excellent effort in doubles go to waste as they took four of the six matches to seal the victory. Cariov playing at No. 3 singles got things started with a straight set 6-2, 6-0 victory over Dos. Moments later, No. 1 Borut Martincevic won a hard fought victory over Uribe 6-4, 6-3. No. 5 Petar Danolic, playing his first match in two weeks, clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Echagary. Ryan Shupe, currently ranked 88th in the nation, was forced to retire from his match due to a thumb injury suffered last week in practice.
Texas Tech will have it's final regular season and home match of the year next week on April 23 when they face Tyler Junior College. The match is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Lubbock High School courts.
