Tech loses battle to No. 8 Arizona

LUBBOCK, Texas – Even though No. 66 Texas Tech forced three sets in all six singles matches and played four tiebreaker sets, the No. 8-ranked Arizona Wildcats won it, 4-1, over the Red Raiders on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.  Â
Arizona (18-3, 6-0 Big 12) opened the match by winning the doubles point over Texas Tech (12-10, 2-5 Big 12). At court three, the duo of Cole Stelse and Alejandro Arcila defeated Felipe Pagnacco and Thomas Van Den Dooren, 6-2. Tech evened it up with a win on court two from Sebastian Abboud and Tyler Stewart over Alexander Rozin and Jay Friend, 6-4. Clinching the doubles point for the Wildcats were No. 30-ranked Filip Gustafsson and Glib Sekachov over Niksa Arsic and Thiago Guglieri by a 6-4 score, giving Arizona an early 1-0 lead.
Arizona won the first singles match after Arcila defeated Van Den Dooren at court six, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. The Wildcats went up 3-0 when No. 59 Gustafsson beat Stewart at court two by a 6-0, 6-7 (8), 6-3 score. In that match, Stewart fought hard in the second set, saving three match points in the process, to even the sets. At court three, Ludovico Vaccari earned his second ranked victory this season. In the first set, No. 82 Rozin won it in a close tiebreaker, 7-6 (5). But, Vaccari responded by winning the next two sets, 6-1, 6-1, for the victory, giving the Red Raiders a point on the board.
Clinching the match was No. 4-ranked Friend at the top court over Arsic. Arsic was able to claim the first set, 6-4, but Friend came back to win it, 6-2, 6-4, in the ensuing sets to secure the win for Arizona. At court four, Pagnacco was in a third set with No. 111 Zoran Ludoski, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 0-2, while Guglieri was in a third set as well with Sekachov at court five, 7-6 (9), 4-6, 1-2, before their matches went unfinished.
Up next, the Red Raiders host the Baylor Bears at the McLeod Tennis Center on Thursday, April 9 at 5 p.m. for senior day.
