Texas Tech Men's Tennis Wins Season Opener

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raiders (1-0) won their 1999 season opener in impressive fashion sweeping Abilene Christian University 7-0 at the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus today.
For three players, it was their first-ever match in a Red Raider uniform. Borut Martincevic (Maribor, Slovenia), who was forced to sit out the 1998 season for eligibility purposes, won his match at No. 1 singles defeating Andrew Cole 6-3, 6-3. He also teamed with Ryan Shupe (Greensboro, North Carolina) to defeat Cole and Jason Kirkland in No. 1 doubles 8-5.
Dustin Hawk (Abilene, Texas) made his debut against his former Abilene Christian teammates in excellent fashion. Hawk beat Dean Petty 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles play. He also paired with fellow newcome Jevgenij Cariov (Lithuania) to defeat Ryan Hughes and Walter Seidel 8-1 in the most lopsided doubles match of the day.
Cariov opened the dual match season at No. 4 singles with a win over Seidel 6-0, 6-3.
"The team came out today focused and showed great intensity," Director of Tennis Tim Siegel said. "I don't think anyone would say that we played great, but it is the first match of the season and the speed of the courts in the ATC makes it a very difficult place to play for our newcomers. This is the first of many matches this season, but I would already say our doubles looks stronger than last year and, if we can remain healthy, the team should have excellent depth at the lower singles matches."
"West Texas A&M is a team very similar to ACU. We will have to play well to win the match."
Texas Tech takes the court again on Sunday, February 7th, at 1 p.m. against West Texas A&M. The match will be held in the ATC and admission is free.
