LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team completed its first week of three and two-a-day preseason practices Saturday with a scrimmage in the Womens Gym on the Texas Tech campus. Reporting to campus were 18 players including nine returning letterwinners and four of the six 1997 starters.
Three newcomers- junior transfer Lori Garber (Hawaii), freshman transfer Yolanda Cumbess (redshirt last year at Purdue) and freshman Skydra Orzen (Albuquerque, N.M.) all joined the team. All three will make significant contributions to the Red Raiders and could possibly earn starting roles.
Practices are open to the public. Texas Tech will probably hold one or two scrimmages next week.
The Red Raiders open their season September 2 at William & Mary then travel to Fairfax, Va. to compete in the Brions Grill Patriot Invitational at George Mason University (UM-Baltimore County, Liberty, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, George Mason). Texas Tech will first debut at home on September 11-12 with its own Four Points-Sheraton/Red Raider Classic when Centenary, Belmont, Oral Roberts and UC-Santa Barbara serve up competition.
