LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team will play on live national television against No. 19 Texas A&M. The match will be televised by Fox Sports Net and will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday. Friday, Texas Tech will travel to No. 12 Texas for a 7 p.m. match in Gregory Gymnasium.
Texas Tech enters its weekend schedule with a 16-7 overall record and a 5-5 Big 12 Conference record. The Red Raiders are tied at fifth in the conference standings with Texas A&M.
No. 19 Texas A&M enters the weekend with a 12-6 overall record (5-5 in Big 12 play). The Aggies defeated Texas Tech 15-9, 15-3, 15-6 in the first matchup of the two squads, but last year Tech upset A&M on their home floor. The Aggies could enter the weekend without their star, All America Stacy Sykora who is listed as "questionable" with a sprained foot.
No. 12 Texas is 15-3 overall and 9-1 in the Big 12 Conference. The Longhorns, who defeated Texas Tech 15-9, 18-16, 15-5 in the teams first matchup, are led by All America player Demetria Sance.
"Texas is playing great volleyball and are led by Demetria Sance who has the opportunity to be the National Player of the Year. Shes as good as anyone out there. The first time we played them, we handled their other players well but she had a great game and had 24 kills and hit near-.500. She made a huge difference in the match. I think weve got confidence and well go down there and have a good match."
"Then we play Sunday against Texas A&M." Nelson said. "I think well go down there and play well. The first time we played them, we didnt play well at all. We won down there last year and we really feel like we can go down there again and have a good showing on national television. Being on television is a great thing for volleyball. We were only able to get five games on television this year and fortunately for us, two of them came to Texas Tech. Two times in the next few weeks, were on national television and thats a great opportunity for us to showcase our programs and our sport."
