LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech University All-America candidate Brooke Lowrance claimed a three-shot victory in the second Jeannine McHaney Memorial Golf Tournament.
"Brooke Lowrance, she's an All-American, what can you say," Texas Tech director of golf Jeff Mitchell said. "This is just going to be a steping stone for her. Learning how to win, to me, is the very last thing that a college golfer has to learn and she's getting a real taste of that."
Lowrance, a senior from Snyder, Texas, claimed her first outright medalist title with a 4-over-par 76 today and a 3-over 219 total. Lowrance had previously tied for first as a freshman in the 1996 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. Oregon State's Kathleen Takaishi finished second with a 6-over 222. TCU's Angela Stanford finished third with a 7-over 223.
"Today was a different story than yesterday," Lowrance said. "I didn't do exactly what I wanted to, but I survived. I had a pretty confident attitude. I never really thought about losing."
Oregon State (906) eased to a 12-shot victory with a 309 total today over the windy par 72, 6,138-yard Lubbock Country Club course. TCU (918) finished second, Texas Tech (922) third and SMU (930) fourth. Oklahoma (950) was fifth, Lamar (971) sixth, Wichita State (972) seventh and Hardin-Simmons (1,013) eighth.
"Our score was worse today," Oregon State head coach Rise Lakowske said. "I think the golf course played a little more difficult today. We made some mental errors today, but not so many that it killed us. I'm pleased in the way they played."
Texas Tech fired a final-round 311. The Red Raiders' Jamie Vannoy (228) finished seventh. Junior Heather Wrede (240), playing in only her second career tournament in team competition, finished 22nd. Sophomore Priscillia Hunt, who tied for first last season, struggled again Tuesday by firing a 16-over 88 to finish in a tie for 23rd at 243. Senior Beth Covington shot 8-over 80 today to finish in a tie for 28th at 246.
Freshman Jennifer Newhouse was the top individual finisher in a tie for 16th at 237 after a 7-over 79 today. Junior Julie McMahon tied for 33rd with a 251 total.
"I'd have to say I'm a little disappointed in this finish," Mitchell said. "I'm optimistic about the future of this team. We had some players that have not played a great deal of golf that came through and played some decent golf this week."
