Cross Country Competes at Cowboy Jamboree

Stillwater, Oklahoma - The Texas Tech Mens and Womens cross country teams competed today at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The women finished ninth out of the 15 teams competing and eighth out of the 11 division I teams in the field. The men finished fifteenth out of the 16 teams competing and eleventh out of the 11 division I teams. The University of Washington won the womens championship and Arkansas the mens.
Leading the way for the women was Kristen Koppes (Redding, Calif.) She finished 25th in the 119 runner field with a time of 19:11 on the 5,000 meter course. Rounding out the Tech runners was Tara Hangge (Richland, Wash.) in 36th with a mark of 19:30; Courtney Nolen (Houston, Texas) 43rd, 19:46; Iwu Ngozi (Houston, Texas) 96th 21:40; Amber Affeldt (Coon Rapids, Minn.) 99th, 21:55; and Paige Bradberry (Hubbard, Texas) 101st, 22:05. The top overall female finisher was Hanna Smedstad of Oklahoma State with a time of 17:46.
The men were lead by the duo of Samson Ngetich (Londiani, Kenya) and David Leigh (Grapevine, Texas). Ngetich finished 79th and Leigh 80th with times of 27:05 and 27:06 respectively on the 8,000 meter run. Other Red Raider male competitors were Chris Thomas (Lubbock, Texas) 108th, 28:06; Jessie Williams (Rantoul, Ill.) 114th, 28:10; J.R. Dutchover 132nd, 28:53; and Gary Bodony (Rantoul, Ill.) 138, 29:30. Top finisher for the men was Eliud Njubi of Dodge City Junior College with a time of 24:21.
Both the mens and womens teams compete next week at the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas, at Mae Simmons Park. The women are scheduled to run at 9 a.m. and the men follow at 9:55 a.m. Schools from the Big 12 are scheduled to compete.
