LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head football coach Spike Dykes announced several staff changes for the upcoming season, including the retirement of Doyle Parker and the addition of Jason Clemmons to the full-time coaching staff.
Clemmons will serve as the team's defensive tackles coach, a position he inherited last season as a graduate assistant coach. David Moody will move from tight ends/tackles to defensive ends, while Dick Winder will incorporate the tight end position as part of his duties as the teams receivers coach. Former Red Raider center Jay Pugh will be a graduate assistant along with current graduate assistant Cody Chisum.
Parker, who is retiring after 12 years on the Texas Tech coaching staff and 39 years in the coaching profession, has coached Red Raider linebackers, tight ends, and, most recently, defensive ends during his tenure at Texas Tech. He began his career as an assistant coach at Hale Center (Texas) High School. He coached at 10 different high schools in Texas, in addition to Rice University, Lamar University and Texas Tech. He first joined Dykes as an assistant at Belton High School in 1966 and moved with him to Big Spring from 1967-68. He received his first head coaching position at Devine High School in 1969.
"Everybody has a friend that is like a brother to them," said Dykes. "That person for me is Doyle Parker. We have been together off and on for 32 years and that is something that will be difficult to easily walk away from. He has been an outstanding friend, a great coach and has been a major influence on Texas Tech and the players he has coached. Our staff and players will really miss him. We wish he and his wife, Shirley, nothing but the best in retirement."
Clemmons, a former Red Raider quarterback, has served as a graduate assistant the last two seasons. Last season he coached the defensive tackles following the retirement of Dean Slayton
"Last year, Jason Clemmons was asked to fill a role that was created with the retirement of Dean Slayton," said Dykes. "Jason turned out to be a great young coach and his defensive line group was one of the more productive units on our team. He is a young guy who has earned the respect of the players and his future is certainly ahead of him. We are truly thrilled to add him to our full-time staff."
