TEXAS TECH
Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes"That is why you never quit. Those guys never quit. It wasn't always pretty. We made a lot of mistakes. But, it was a win. When we really had to we did. I can't believe Chris Birkholz. He was 'Johnny-on-the-spot.' He kept us in the game. You would like to score touchdowns. But, making field goals is better than missing field goals. If you had one like this one every Saturday, there wouldn't be anything left. The two-point plays, when we had to have them to get back into the game, they were really big. We've played four in a row against ranked teams. After losing those three that we felt like we had a chance to win, this would've been a knock-out punch. The Big 12 is tough. You have a big football game every week. When you keep coming back, that is pretty good work. And, that's what these kids did.
"Wane McGarity is something else. He is double tough. He is good. And Ricky Williams is good."
Texas Tech kicker Chris Birkholz
(On four field goals) "Actually I didn't know that I tied the record because I flipped through some media guides and I saw that some guys had three or four. But, that doesn't matter. I am glad for this win and how it helped team.
(On 53-yard field goal) I just went out there like normal. We had someone late getting to the line. And, Jeremy looked back and said that we didn't have enough time. I didn't even got to take my steps (on approach). Thankfully, I was able to make the play."
Texas Tech defensive end Montae Reagor
"It was an up and down game and boy we needed to win. Things are really great right now. We really needed it. It is always good to beat Texas. That always feels good. We worked hard together. And, we knew it would be a tight game. Texas has a good team. We stuck together and won this one.
(On last game at Jones Stadium) I don't think it has really sunk in yet. I love Texas Tech and most of all I love this team. It is just great to go out and win a big one, especially against Texas."
Texas Tech receiver Derek Dorris
"Rob (Peters) did a great job of holding on as long as he could and he was able to make some good passes. It is unbelievable, especially to win this game in our house, in front of our fans and for our seniors. It couldn't be a better night. They were playing me loose. And, I don't know why. I guess it is because of Ricky and his threat."
Texas Tech tailback Ricky Williams
"I wished (UT's Ricky) luck and congratulations on a great season. I told him I hope he wins the big prize. I knew, without a doubt, we were going to get in the end zone there at the end. Once our offense gets into a zone, it is hard to get out of it. We lost three in a row and a lot of our confidence. This game brought out good things for us and our defense came ready to play.
(On out-rushing UT's Ricky) This was not about out-rushing the other guy. This was about who had the most points at the end of the game. People have made a big deal because we share the same name, but we are different. The win was important for us, not the rushing yards. Of course, I get a big charge out of out-rushing him. That just lets me know that our defense is playing well."
Texas Tech tight end Kyle Allamon
"We were able to put together some good drives and that was the difference in the game. It was good to win this one for our seniors. We lose 18 great guys next year. It feels really good.
(On playing against former HS teammate Aaron Humphrey) He has gotten a lot bigger since high school. He is a great competitor and a friend. A couple of time we went at it. But, it was all competition. It was just great to play him."
TEXAS
Texas coach Mack Brown
"Give Texas Tech a tremendous amount of credit. They have been in three of these close games before and lost all three. I have heard the (Texas) coaches say we didn't lose this game, we just ran out of time. We didn't play consistently in the first half. We didn't run well. In the second half we didn't make the plays defensively. (The blame) is on me. This is a tough place to play, especially because it is senior day. Give Spike Dykes and Texas Tech a lot of credit."
Texas receiver Wane McGarity
"Texas Tech played a good ballgame and we didn't make the plays we needed to today. This team has battled back from adversity before. We have just got to work towards the next one against Texas A&M. It was a back and forth game. We weren't stopped the whole time. The clock just ran out on us."
Texas quarterback Major Applewhite
"Tonight was a situation where both teams were scoring back and forth. And, whoever had the ball last was going to win the game. Unfortunately, Texas Tech had the last score. It is especially hard to lose after winning six striaght games. We fought hard tonight and we will put this out of our system and be ready for Texas A&M."
Texas defensive end Aaron Humphrey
"Our defense was on the field too much tonight. We need to force more thre-and-out situations in order to ngive our offense more chances to score."
