Texas Tech Announces Team Football Awards

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech football coach Spike Dykes handed out a number of annual individual awards as the team celebrated the 1998 season tonight at the Red Raiders' annual team banquet held at the Lubbock Civic Center Exhibit Hall.
For the second consecutive season, senior defensive end Montae Reagor (Waxahachie, Texas), a consensus first-team All Americca selection, was named the winner of the Pete Cawthon Memorial Award, honoring Texas Tech's Most Valuable Player. Junior quarterback Rob Peters (Katy, Texas) was the recipient of the Dell Morgan Memorial Courage Award, honoring the team's most courageous performer. Senior quarterback Matt Tittle (Flower Mound, Texas) was awarded with the Donny Anderson Sportsmanship Award.
Captains Awards were given to Stoney Garland, Donnie Hart (Wolfforth, Texas), Rob Peters (Katy, Texas), Montae Reagor (Waxahachie, Texas), Taurus Rucker (Denison, Texas) and Kyle Shipley (Arlington, Texas). The Clint Ramsey Academic Effort Award was awarded to Sammy Morris (San Antonio, Texas). Punter Jeremy Hernandez (Midland, Texas) was handed the award for the senior with the highest grade point average.
Special appreciation awards were given to defensive ends coach Doyle Parker, who retired this season following 12 years of coaching at Texas Tech. In addition, Dykes awarded Texas Tech's maintenance supervisor Ken Moore with an award of special thanks for his contribution to the Texas Tech football program.
"We are really proud of our entire football team and the effort they put forth this season," Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes said. "The individuals we honor tonight are a reflection of the total team effort it takes to be successful, both on and off the field. I am proud of every one of our players and the contribution they have made to our football program."
Texas Tech concluded its regular season with a 7-4 record and appeared in the Sanford Independence Bowl on December 31, 1998.
