LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Director of Track and Field Greg Sholars announced today that Ryan Cruz of Shallowater, Texas, has signed a national letter of intent to run for the Red Raiders next year.
Cruz established himself as one of the top distance runners in Texas at Shallowater High School. He was the 1997 2A state champion and 1998 3A state champion in cross country. Cruz was selected to the all-state cross country team all four years of high school and won every race he competed in his senior year.
Cruz also excelled in track events and was the 1998 state 2A champion in the 3200 meters and fourth in the 1600 meters.
"Ryan is one of the best high school distance runners in the state of Texas," Dave Smith assistant coach in charge of cross country and track distance events said. "He will be able to step into our program and contribute immediately. We are excited about him coming to Texas Tech and hope he will be the beginning of many more Red Raider distance runners to come from West Texas."
