Texas Tech's team captains for the ISU game were: Rob Peters (Katy, Texas), Donnie Hart (Wolfforth, Texas), Montae Reagor (Waxahachie, Texas), Taurus Rucker (Denison, Texas) and Kyle Shipley (Arlington, Texas)... Texas Tech won the toss for the third time in its four games this season.
Texas Tech players not on the Iowa State trip due to injury include: Kevin McCullar (ankle, Irving, Texas) and Jaret Greaser (right groin, Amarillo, Texas)... Freshman Adam Dwight (Dallas, Texas) made the first travel squad of his career as a backup kicker... Junior Rudy Renda (Keller, Texas) started his first career game at fullback in the place of injured Jonathan Hawkins (Wichita Falls, Texas)... Junior Rob Peters (Katy, Texas) entered the game with 7:15 left in the second quarter. It was his first action since the second quarter of the season-opener against Texas-El Paso. Peters suffered a left shoulder sprain and fractured right thumb against UTEP. He completed his first pass attempt of the ISU game, 26-yards to Ricky Williams with 6:32 remaining in the second quarter.
Texas Tech made it first-ever trip to Ames to play Iowa State today. Both previous meetings took place in Lubbock. ISU will return in trip in 1999 as part of the Big 12 Conference schedule... Texas Tech defensive coordinator John Goodner coached at Jack Trice Stadium while a member of the Baylor coaching staff in 1988. The Bears won that game 35-0...
Texas Tech scored on its opening possession for the third-straight game... ISU was the second-straight team to score a field goal on its opening possession against Texas Tech this season. The Red Raiders have not allowed a TD on an opponent's opening possession this season... ISU's 32-yard TD reception in the third quarter was the longest scoring play from scrimmage against Texas Tech this season and the 80-yard scoring drive was the longest against the Red Raiders in the first four games of the season.
Dorian Pitts (Lubbock, Texas) recorded his first career interception with a 31-yard return on the final play of the first quarter... Sophomore kicker Chris Birkholz (Temple, Texas) missed the first career field goal attempt of his career, a 41-yard effort into the wind with 8:15 left in the second quarter. He was 4-for-4 going into the game in the place of injured starter Jaret Greaser... Sophomore receiver Tim Baker (Borger, Texas) suffered an injury to his left ankle in the first half and did not return after halftime... Sophomore tackle Steve McFadden (Houston, Texas) suffered an injury to his left ankle and was taken for x-rays at halftime and did not return to the game.
Ricky Williams (Duncanville, Texas) recorded his second-lowest single-quarter total of the season with just 17 yards on four carries against ISU. He carried just three times for 12 yards in the fourth quarter of Texas Tech's 30-0 win over North Texas at Texas Stadium. His 42 yards in the first half against ISU was a season-low for a half (previous was 59 in the first half against UTEP). Texas Tech's 45 rushing yards in the first half was also a season-low.
Williams' second touchdown of the game was the fourth consecutive time he has reached the end zone twice in a game this season. His 105 yard rushing performance, which was his low of this season, was the fifth-straight game he has rushed for over a 100 and seventh overall in his 15 game career. Also, Williams' four receptions for 53 yards is a new career high for receptions and receiving yards. His previous high was 2 receptions, which he set in five different games, and 36 yards against Texas in 1997. He now has 770 rushing yards and 874 all-purpose yards in 1998.
Sophomore Jonathan Hawkins (Wichita Falls, Texas) scored his first TD of the season on a four-yard reception with 7:09 left in the third quarter. It was also the first receiving TD of his career and the second overall. Hawkins suffered a shoulder injury last week against Fresno State and was listed asdoubtful for today's game. He did not start the game, snapping an eight-game streak.
Senior Donnie Hart (Wolfforth, Texas) recorded a 68-yard TD reception in the third quarter (5:24), marking his longest reception of the year and tied for the third-longest of his career... Junior Reagan Bownds (Eldorado, Texas) recorded his second interception of the season and of his career. The 20-yard return was a career-long.
Texas Tech improved to 7-3 on the road against Big 12 opponents since the league began in 1996. The only two Red Raider conference road losses came at Kansas State and Nebraska in 1996. Texas Tech improves to 4-0 for the first time since 1976 when they started the season 8-0 and finished as the co-champions of the Southwestern Conference with a 10-2 record.
