LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University women's golf team has signed two student-athletes to national letters of intent, director of golf Jeff Mitchell announced today.
In his first year as director of golf and in his ninth season as the women's head coach, Mitchell signed Stephanie Dukes of Fort Worth's North Richland Hills High School and Melanie Hunt of Horizon High in Phoenix, Ariz.
"This might be the best recruiting class I have had," said Mitchell, who is in his first season coaching both the men's and women's programs after being named director of golf at Texas Tech earlier this year. "This will be a strong class for the future of Texas Tech women's golf."
Dukes was an all-regional selection for North Richland Hills High School. She won the qualifier at the 1998 U.S. Junior Girls Amateur and was 10th in the 1998 Texas-Oklahoma junior tournament. She also won the 1998 North Texas PGA junior event at Fort Worth.
"Stephanie is a strong, young player," Mitchell said. "In only one and a half years of competitive golf, Stephanie has won tournaments, shot in the 60s and improved a tremendous amount. She is very athletic and has a lot of natural talent. She will be fun to watch for the next few years."
Hunt, the sister of Red Raider sophomore Priscillia Hunt, made holes-in-one on consecutive days on the same hole in the Junior World Championship when she was 11 years old. She finished second in the Arizona state championship earlier this month.
An all-state and all-region golfer for four years, Hunt finished among the top 10 in the Arizona State Championship four times. She also won the Arizona State junior stroke play and match play titles three times.
"Melanie is a great talent," Mitchell said. "She is a tough competitor. She will have a strong influence on the team. She will also be a motivator for her sister Priscillia. They hate losing."
