LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech University head mens basketball coach James Dickey announced today that Shanon Hays has been named an assistant coach on the Red Raider coaching staff. Hays spent the previous three seasons as head coach at Abilene Christian University.
"I am thrilled about the chance to work with Coach Dickey," Hays said. "I am also very excited about the opportunity to coach in a program like Texas Tech in such a prestigious conference."
Hays compiled a 58-26 record in his three seasons as the Wildcats head coach, and this past season led them to the South Region Central tournament, ACUs first NCAA postseason appearance since 1987. During his three seasons, his teams posted records of 15-12, 22-6 and 21-8 this past season.
Following three years in the high school coaching ranks, including two at Lubbock Christian High School, Hays finished 19-10 in his first collegiate head coaching position at Frank Phillips College in Borger in 1996. He joined ACU prior to the start of the 1996-97 campaign. Hays previously served as a volunteer assistant on Dickeys staff during the 1991-92 season.
"I am excited to have Shanon back on our staff," Dickey said. "He has been successful at every stop. I have been impressed with his work ethic and his enthusiasm and success in recruiting. He understands Texas Tech and our program and will be a valuable asset to our institution."
Hays, the son of Red Raider baseball coach Larry Hays, graduated from Lubbock Christian University in 1991 with a bachelors degree in history. He was a letterman on the 1987 baseball and basketball teams at LCU before transferring to Texas Tech, where he earned three baseball letters.
"It was hard for me to leave Abilene Christian," Hays said. "But, this is a homecoming for me and my wife. My children will have the opportunity to be around their grandparents on a regular basis."
