LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head football coach Spike Dykes and his staff remained pleased with the effort and attitude of 25 newcomers following a pair of practices in shorts and helmets Thursday.
?So far, so good,? Dykes said following the second 90-minute workout Thursday afternoon. ?The good news is we are hale and hearty. The bad news is we haven?t done much yet.?
The newest Red Raiders worked in individual position groups and got in some team drills as numbers allowed on the grass practice fields south of Jones Stadium. The freshmen will not practice again until joining the upperclassmen Monday morning.
?Time will tell on these guys, but it?s a lot better than it could be,? Dykes said.
Texas Tech upperclassmen report Friday and will undergo physicals and conditioning tests. Saturday and Sunday schedules are filled with meetings before full squad practices start Monday.
The Red Raiders will work three days in shorts before putting on full gear for the first time Aug. 19. The first scrimmage of pre-season camp is set for Aug. 21.
Texas Tech opens the season Labor Day (Sept.6) at Arizona State. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. central time.
