LUBBOCK, Texas - Red Raider defensive end Taurus Rucker said ?everybody?s been looking good? through the first two days of full squad practices. Texas Tech completed a pair of 90-minute workouts in shorts and helmets for the second-straight day in preparation for the first full pad practice on Thursday.
?The coaches have been surprised by how well everyone is doing,? Rucker said. ?It took us a little time to get back into the groove of things, but we have gotten better and will continue to do so as each day passes.?
Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes said the team?s ?conditioning is obviously good? and ?there is a lot of competitive spirit for open positions.? Dykes added that he and the coaching staff are pleased after the first two days of workouts.
Both of Tuesday?s drills consisted of individual group work, team periods and work on the kicking game. Wednesday?s workouts are expected to be identical.
The Red Raiders put on pads for the first time Thursday afternoon, working toward the first scrimmage of the pre-season Saturday morning. When the pads go on, full gear workouts are scheduled for the afternoons, with morning practices conducted in shoulder pads and helmets.
The 1999 Meet the Raiders Day is scheduled for Sat., Aug, 28, at Raider Alley. Texas Tech fans will have the opportunity to meet the players and receive autographs. The event will run from 5-7 p.m.
Texas Tech opens the 1999 season Labor Day at Arizona State. The game, which will be televised by Fox Sports Net, is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. (CDT).
