Volleyball Team to Begin Practice Wednesday

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team will begin practice on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Women's Gym on the Texas Tech University campus. Team members reported to campus Monday to begin preparation for the upcoming 1999 season.
"We can't wait to begin practice for the new season," said Texas Tech volleyball coach Jeff Nelson who enters his fifth season with the Red Raiders. "We have eight returning letterwinners and three starters back from last year's squad and look forward to working with our six newcomers."
Those six newcomers include 6-7 Washington State junior transfer Colleen Smith along with five freshman -- Jenny Donohoo (Amarillo/Tascosa), Melissa McGehee (Kerrville, Texas/Tivy), Ann Romjue (Papillion, Neb./LaVista), Stacey Poole (Las Cruces, N.M./Onate) and Bonny Smith (Lubbock/Coronado).
Three starters also return to the program from last year's 23-11 team that advanced to their third NCAA tournament appearance in the last four seasons.
They include 1998 All Region middle blocker and senior Lori Garber, Texas Tech's match kill recordholder and senior Courtney Putnam and sophomore setter Skydra Orzen.
The Red Raiders will begin their season on Saturday, September 1st at 7 p.m. against New Mexico State.

Tuesday, August 10: Team picture, physicals, team meetings
Wednesday, August 11: 9 a.m. practice, 3 p.m. practice

Friday, August 13: 9 a.m. practice, 3 p.m. practice
Saturday, August 14: 9 a.m. practice, 3 p.m. SCRIMMAGE
Saturday, Sept. 1: First Match- New Mexico State at Texas Tech, 7 p.m., Place to be determined
