LUBBOCK, Texas - Offensive tackle Steve McFadden has decided to give up football, according to an announcement Monday by Texas Tech head coach Spike Dykes.
McFadden, a junior from Houston, started eight games during the 1998 season before undergoing a late-season appendectomy, which caused him to miss the Sanford Independence Bowl. He started seven games in 1997 after redshirting in 1996.
"We are sorry to see Steve go," Dykes said. "He has been a good one for us and we wish him the very best."
Dykes and the Texas Tech staff will welcome 25 football newcomers Tuesday. The newcomers, 19 scholarship players and six walk-ons, will have physicals before practicing for the first time as a group Wednesday. Upperclassmen report on Friday and the first full-squad practices are set for Monday.
