LUBBOCK, Texas - With a sideline full of special guests on hand, Texas Tech closed out the first week of two-a-day practices with a 90-minute scrimmage Friday afternoon at the grass practice fields just southeast of Jones Stadium.
In addition to local media and fans, the Red Raiders worked out in front of ESPN personality Lee Corso, Dallas Cowboy great Mel Renfro and former Texas Tech defensive lineman Stoney Garland.
Renfro is in Lubbock for a speaking engagement and Corso was in town visiting friends and wanted to get a sneak peek at Red Raider Heisman candidate Ricky Williams. Garland visited with former teammates and coaches following the 92-play scrimmage.
The scrimmage was originally scheduled for Saturday morning, but head coach Spike Dykes and his staff decided to move it up and give a leg-weary Texas Tech team Saturday off. The Red Raiders will return to work Sunday at 1:45 p.m.
?It was a typical first scrimmage,? Dykes said. ?It takes a long time to be a good football team and we have only been in pads two days. We have a lot of fine tuning to do.?
The scrimmage opened with the third team offense against the third team defense for 12 plays. Freshman tailback Shaud Williams broke off a long run to highlight the first series. Freshman tight end Nathanael Falls had a couple of big receptions as the threes worked two more series during the drill.
The first offense went against the second defense for 24 plays and the first defense tangled with the second offense for 24 plays. Senior quarterback Rob Peters connected with tight end Tim Winn on an 8-yard touchdown pass in the first offense?s final series.
?I needed that. I haven?t gone full speed in a while,? said Peters, who missed spring drills recovering from surgery to his throwing hand. ?It was a little helter-skelter on that first series, but I was able to calm down later.?
Redshirt freshman defensive end Terrance Colquitt and junior receiver Rodney Downey missed the scrimmage. Colquitt suffered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee while playing pickup basketball before preseason camp, is scheduled for surgery, and will miss the entire season. Downey broke a bone in his left foot in Thursday afternoon?s drills and will miss six to eight weeks.
