LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head football coach Spike Dykes and his staff welcomed 25 newcomers to campus for the start of 1999 football drills Tuesday. The class of newcomers included 19 scholarship players and six invited walk-ons.
Tuesday's activities consisted of checking in, having physicals and going through cardiovascular testing. The new Red Raiders practice together for the first time Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 2:35 p.m. and then twice more as a group Thursday.
"We are really excited about this group of young men," said Dykes, the dean of Big 12 coaches in his 13th season at Texas Tech. "It's a good bunch that I believe Texas Tech folks will be proud of for a long time. We are anxious to get started with them."
Texas Tech varsity football players are scheduled to report Friday and take physicals that evening before attending academic and compliance meetings over the weekend. The first full-squad Red Raider practices are set for Monday at 7:55 a.m. and 1:35 p.m.
