LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team will begin its season tomorrow (Wednesday) against New Mexico State at 7 p.m. in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
"We are extremely excited to get our season started," Texas Tech volleyball coach Jeff Nelson said. "New Mexico State is a tough opponent for us, especially since we are such a young team. Hopefully we can play at the level that we are capable of performing at. If we do that, we should be successful."
The Red Raiders will work several newcomers into the playing rotation including 6-7 junior transfer Colleen Smith along with freshman Ann Romjue, Melissa McGehee and Jenny Donohoo. The three freshmen are potential starters.
Head coach Jeff Nelson's squad welcomes back seven letterwinners from a 23-11, NCAA Tournament squad. Nelson has led his squads to four straight 20+ win seasons and three NCAA Tournament appearances in the past four seasons.
New Mexico State returns nine letterwinners and five seniors from a 7-22 team.
Texas Tech will then host the Four Points Classic over the weekend (Friday/Saturday) in the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. The Red Raiders will play for teams including SMU, North Carolina State, Wright State and Utah. Sunday, Texas Tech will host UT-Pan American at noon.
